sine waves create a smooth up and down wave like motion such as a side view of non-breaking waves. Square waves create sharp up's and down's and a plateau between each period. Triangular waves create a mountain like and a declining peak. Sawtooth is much like triangular waves except they have a alternating series of the peak and a horizontal drop.
