Yep, used to hunt all over Louisiana when I was younger, primarly in Natchitoches parish. I have seen big cats and some followed me around through the woods but kelp their distance. We call them panthers instead of cougers but I guess its the same thing. Was setting trot lines out one night, running the lines and bringing the catch back to the truck to clean them. On one trip back to the truck a large panther was tring to get into my locked ice box. After seeing how brave he was and I had his kind of food, I decided to call it a night. But they are there, so be careful.

There's a black one that roams Hwy 6 W near the fire tower, my neighbors have seen it many times over the years. There's also a buff colored one around the Marthaville area that I have seen personally several times.

Sorry, here we go all over again. They do not come in black. There are only brown ones and not as many as people think they see. Read the article at the top of this page very closely before you decide that they are everywhere. The article can also be found in today's Shreveport Times.

No, do some research. I said this in the other post a few weeks ago, google "melanistic cougars", I think you will be interested in what you find. There have been supposed sightings of cougars for years and only three have been confirmed, one in 2002 and these two recently. The last one before those was in the 1960s. When you report seeing one the LA Dept of Wildlife and Fisheries will come out and look for tracks (all animals leave a track) and check scat (poop) samples, all animals poop too. There has never been any of either one found until now with the last two sightings. Biologists beleive that both pictures are of the same cat. The pictures were taken 100 miles apart, noe if a cat travel 100 miles that quickly wouldnt there be more sightings if they were so plentiful? I am referring to black panthers here also. NEVER been one photographed, the LA Dept of W&F probably do not take those "sightings" quite as serious because that animal does not exist. I know people believe they saw what they saw, but it is just like bigfoot or the loch ness monster is it easily defined in cryptozoology (google that term aslo)

not wanting to start anything but let me tell what the wl&f told me 1 year ago when the cat was seen on our road... a panther, cougar whatever you want to call them come in different colors from coal black, to gray, to brindle, to the fawn colors. the wl&f told me this so i just took them at there word,,,,,maybe there is a difference, but i take them at there word, even though for years they have said that there are not any around our area, but are seen and heard every year. please don't think i want to start an anything,

You took them at their word? Um, didn't they deny that cougars even existed in this area for years? That's kinda like the fox watching the hen house.

I live in the same area as the cougar sighting_ I almost hit a cat with my car when we first moved their. He was black, larger than a dog, had a very long tail, and looked very much like black panthers seen on tv. Can anyone tell me what it was if there are no such thing as black panthers-trust me it was not big foot

YES THERE ARE BLACK ONES, HAVE BEEN SEEN FOR ALONG TIME AS WELL AS THE FAWN ONES, BUT WITH ALL THE PEOPLE CLEAR CUTTING THEIR LAND THEY HAVE NO PLACE TO HIDE NOW AND ARE BEING SEEN ALOT MORE NOW. FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND THE COUGAR THAT WSA CAUGHT ON THE PICTURE WAS IN THE BLACK LAKE AREA RIGHT ACROSS THE LAKE FROM OUR CAMP, THEN WE SEE IT A COUPLE WEEKS LATER, KINDA SCARY, BUT WONT KEEP US FROM CAMPING. AND I DIDN'T LISTEN TO THE WL&F AT ALL, BECAUSE WE HAD HEARD AND SEEN TO MUCH

i don't know why you fight this sooooo hard...???...i have seen a BIG black cat...apparently alot of others have also...to compare this to bigfoot or the loch ness monster is just dumb!!!i have spent alot of my life in the woods, and know what certain animals look like...don't know why dept. of wildlife and fisheries fight this so much????they are around, they are definitely rare, but they are around...too many people i trust have seen them...not to mention the buff/tan cats that alot of people see on a regular basis...the reason there are so few pics of the is that they are very sly animals...nine times out of ten, you don't see them unless they want you to...

I guess they are so sly that a trail camera cant catch one either!? Are they smarter than the brown ones? They have never been run over buy a car anywhere in the world, not even where cougars (panthers) are plentiful. Think about it. Black bears are very rare in La. yet thay get hit by cars and show up on trail cams all the time. Read the article in the Natchitoches Times(information given by a bilogist) from a few weeks ago, it too states that they dont exist.

I GUESS PEOPLE JUST NEED TO BELIEVE WHAT THEY WANT AND OTHERS CAN BELIEVE WHAT THEY TO THINK. I KNOW WHAT I HAVE SEEN , I KNOW WHAT I HAVE HEARD AND NO ONE WILL CHANGE MY MIND. ONE WILL EVENTUALLY GET CAUGHT ON CAMERA, I AM NOT SAYING THEY ARE NOT RARE BUT THEY ARE OUT THERE,(THE BLACK ONES), THE FAWN COLORED ONES ARE MORE PLENTIFUL AND I GUESS PEOPLE WILL REALIZE THEN THAT US COUNTRY FOLK ARE NOT AS CRAZY AS THEY THINK, BUT UNTIL THEN MAYBE THE SKEPTICS NEED TO STAY OUT OF THE WOODS, CAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT MIGHT BE WATCHING YOU............

presently 500-700 louisiana blackbears can be found in the tensas river basin...endangered, yes...rare, i don't think so...but i'm still confused as to why you are so confident to tell people what they have and haven't seen???

People everywhere say they have seen a black cat, so there must be 500-700 of them right? But still they never seem to show up any where on camera or at the taxidermy office. Cougars are hunted as a game animal in many states and NEVER has there been a black one killed. Do they only live here in La where it is illegal to kill them? That seems to be too convienient.
