Always comes down to money doesn't it?

f course it does. Because when the children involved in this accident were hospitalized, the driver's insurance company didn't cover more than a fraction of the medical bills. Kentucky law requires only $50,000 worth of insurance coverage for any one accident for ALL bodily injury (KRS 304.39-110), and I can guarantee you that the medical bills for each of the children hospitalized in this accident exceeded $100,000. The hospital doesn't just take the portion the insurance offers; they go after the parents to pay the balance of the bill. That's $100,000 EACH, and the auto insurance only pays $50,000 total. The boy is dead, and the girl will have future medical expenses, in addition to the ones incurred from the initial hospitalization after the accident. So, the dead boy's parents go home without their beloved child, and face paying upwards of $75,000 for the medical treatment that failed to save his life. The seriously injured girl goes home with brain damage among her other injuries, and her parents face the same $75,000 or more of medical bills that the insurance company isn't required to pay.
And part of the reason that this boy died and this girl was seriously injured is that Keeneland, since they have sooo much money that they own the city, feels like they are entitled to use the emergency lanes of public roads as their employee parking lots. The driver of the car made it to the emergency lane and hit the parked car, but it was far more important for Keeneland to save a little money so the guy working on their sign didn't have to park legally and walk across a field or climb over a fence. Lizbeth, I hope you make about $30,000 a year. I hope you have a child. A beautiful, sweet, gifted child, who is seriously injured in a car accident. I hope the doctors work on your child for hours -- and that those are the longest hours of your life -- only to tell you that he or she is dead. I hope that within minutes, some hospital accounting person is there to harass you into committing to a repayment agreement for, oh, the way medical costs rise,$275,000 (if it's within the next 2 years), since Kentucky law only requires the car insurance to pay 50K. I hope you go home to your empty house, and see some of your child's pictures, grades, ACT scores, homemade presents, mother's day cards, and you valiantly pay all of those medical costs on your own, over 50 years @100 per week when your after-tax is $400 because money is so unimportant to you. I hope you get up every morning and go to work, and when you seem too sad, some co-worker tells you, "it's been 2 months now, it's time for you to get over it." I personally can't wait for that to happen to you. Because your child means NOTHING to anyone, and as your comment indicates, your child means NOTHING to you compared to protecting BIG MONEY. |
