Letter: Keene sides with oil companies

Full story: Chico Enterprise-Record

During a time when we are all feeling the economy crunch and watching schools have to send out pink slips, I find it irresponsible of Rick Keene to be supporting the gas companies.

Ok raise the taxes on oil companies. Hit them hard.Give all the money to the schools. They need to give the administrators raises and more perks. Guess what the oil companies are going to do? Raise the price of gas! Maybe Tim should buy stock in the oil companies and give his profits to the schools.

So Tim will you be in line to help the oil companies when there economy goes down? this kind of taxation by envy smacks of socialist drival. Keene is right that spending (income confiscation and transfer) is way out of control. In fact the single greatest benefactor of the gas prices is the government. The margins on gas are slim. It is just that they have a totally captive customer base. The government produces nothing yet profits the most from the rise in gas prices.

Yep, I think Scott is just mis-informed.(No name calling on this site).
Over 40 percent Cheron Oil's stock is owned by Public worker's retirment investment firms like CalPers. This is the teacher's retirment and other government workers retirments. This talk about taxing or taking over the oil companies is nosense, and the blabber-mouth politicians trying to get your votes know it. People like Scott don't know this, so may I suggest reading and learning more? Don't just believe what a politican says. Look how stupid people got about Obama, supposdedly intelligent people, without knowing diddly about his background. Sweet words don't make truth.

I hope that you are not referring to me GeoT., I know the stocks are strong, most people with an IRA/retirement plan are invested in energy (some do not even know it).I am just saying that before anyone rants about the evil corporate oil, the taxation and double taxation by the government generates "windfalls for the government" without any effort or risk on it's part. Why do they always want to open up the strategic reserves instead of lowering the fees and taxes applied on the per gallon and price basis.

Finally, it is not the oil companies setting the price of oil. It is the speculators on the spot market buying and selling contracts. The oil companies may be able to manipulate the cost of a barrel, but the world wide price is set by the speculators. They panic at every thing. If you want to have oil prices come down, then go and get china, and india to stop growing. Just by the way, we get the vast majority of our oil from canada and mexico.

why have the oil companies closed ALL the refineries in Calif.?to munipulate the price at the pump.less supply, more demand, higher price per gallon=more profit-the American public be damned.not only the public but the whole countries economy.stop trying to blame China and India, they aren't the ones making multi-billion dollar quarterly profits. What is wrong with making multi million dollar profits and lowering the price?GREED!!!

Bruce, it is China and other growing countries. THe price of cement and other resources have shot up dramatically. THe Okland Airport had to suspend their plans to build a parking garage becasue of this, and the blame was put on Chins's demand which has made it unaffordable. Why would the Oil companies want to trash the economy? They would loose money. Now the democrates want to add another 50 cent tax per galln saying it will be good for the enviroment. It will be haell for lower incomes, and they claim to represent to working class and those living below the poverty level? Bull!

I'm getting kind of tired of hearing about our schools not having enough money. They now get the majority of our taxes plus bond money plus impact fees plus who knows what else. Start taxing businesses to support schools and guess who is going to pay those taxes. The oil companies? Not a chance. Gas prices will go higher as will food and most everything else. Think about what your wishing for as you might regret it later.

Daily Horoscope for December 22

Pisces

You're lacking in energy and resources today, which will soon slow you down and make you feel as though you're wading through treacle. The only way to cope is to have as many breaks as possible, and not to set yourself impossible goals that you could never hope to meet. You're also very susceptible to the criticisms or put-downs of others, but do your best to ignore them.
