free cell phone for welfare/ssi recipients

as if they dont already get everything paid for them, welfare/ssi recipients can get free cell phone service. when are the working people who need help going to get any help? whats next, free gas? disgusting!

I can understand distributing them for emergency call service, but why not hand out Tracfones or something with like $10 of credit? They'll make emergency calls without having credit on them.

Any cell phone even after service is discontinued can be used to call 911.

I think what the point of giving out the cells is allegedly for job search, etc. Hard to get a job without a phone.

What I think the person is referring to is a discount phone service for low income people. Not limited to welfare or SSI recipients.

You get the first month of land line service, a cheap celly and a few minute for free then you are charged something similar to the charge of the lifeline telephone service after that.

So yes, you do technically get a free cell phone but it's chit and you do have to pay for the service.

They may get a free phone, but don't they have to pay $35 for the service? I know someone that got one, but she has to pay the bill and gets no long distance either. So maybe its not as bad as it seems????

I saw a tv commercial for this. A free phone with 250 minutes a month for people with foodstamps, welfare or low income.

Its a good idea for the elderly on fixed incomes...

I am paying for my mom's cell phone bill, do they have any unlimited call times? Right now I pay an additional amount so she can have unlimited calls after 7pm.

I am pretty sure the lady I know got a free phone and then service through Bluegrass Cellular. Her bill is $35 a month for unlimited
Local calls. She can't make any long distance calls. Her phone is a piece of junk and don't work half the time. Its crazy how much they charge to replace the phone. She finally just had it turned off cause it didn't work 1/2 the time anyway. Maybe there's better plans out there now. I don't even know if Bluegrass Cellular still exsists.

well that's out. She calls her sister in Michigan everyday now that my dad is dead.
