I can understand distributing them for emergency call service, but why not hand out Tracfones or something with like $10 of credit? They'll make emergency calls without having credit on them.

Any cell phone even after service is discontinued can be used to call 911.

I think what the point of giving out the cells is allegedly for job search, etc. Hard to get a job without a phone.

What I think the person is referring to is a discount phone service for low income people. Not limited to welfare or SSI recipients.

You get the first month of land line service, a cheap celly and a few minute for free then you are charged something similar to the charge of the lifeline telephone service after that.

So yes, you do technically get a free cell phone but it's chit and you do have to pay for the service.
so far so good

They may get a free phone, but don't they have to pay $35 for the service? I know someone that got one, but she has to pay the bill and gets no long distance either. So maybe its not as bad as it seems????

All you have to do is search on Google and find several programs, they're all about the same... here is Sprints.

I saw a tv commercial for this. A free phone with 250 minutes a month for people with foodstamps, welfare or low income.

Its a good idea for the elderly on fixed incomes...

I am paying for my mom's cell phone bill, do they have any unlimited call times? Right now I pay an additional amount so she can have unlimited calls after 7pm.

I am pretty sure the lady I know got a free phone and then service through Bluegrass Cellular. Her bill is $35 a month for unlimited
Local calls. She can't make any long distance calls. Her phone is a piece of junk and don't work half the time. Its crazy how much they charge to replace the phone. She finally just had it turned off cause it didn't work 1/2 the time anyway. Maybe there's better plans out there now. I don't even know if Bluegrass Cellular still exsists.
