I applied online yesterday and was contacted today to take a short survey. The email said for me to come to the job fair for a typing test and computer test. It also said that the starting pay was $10.52 per hour. It was a customer service position. I don't know what the supervisor positions are offering. The paper said 12 something an hour but that's not what my email listed the starting pay as being.
Very interesting. That is about what the temporary government call center jobs for medicare paid. Then they had to pay a couple of dollars more because they were not offering benefits because it was temporary. And then if they do the wage assessment, who know what they will actually be paying!

I thought these were going to be full time jobs with full benefits like they are saying in the media???? The lady I saw on the news from Laurel County said they were paying $12 something WITH FULL BENEFITS.

Wasn't it the Right Wing that figured one should be happy with a part time job, earning minimum wage over drawing unemployment? I certainly now hope no Right Winger would complain about any of this, don't you?

$10.52/Hr. is above minimum wage, so I'm sure Republicans and conservatives should be knocking the doors down to get these jobs ...since it beats unemployment (or equal to it ). They say it's better to work and do what you can even if unemployment benefits are more than the wage you earn. You don't want to disappoint the Republicans and Conservatives by voicing any complaint about working.

Well that is the crazy thing, they won't. They certainly want us to believe that any job is better than no job and they buy that here, hook, line, and sinker.

From what I am figuring their pay rate will put a single mother of 2 really close to the line to draw food stamps.

People do not understand why these call centers are coming here. Now, I guess here is better than there for us but we need to understand that they are still paying the very minimum that they can under a federal contract. They did not pull these numbers out of the sky. The Federal Government makes them pay prevailing wages. Kentucky ranks at about 47 out of 50 on per capita and personal income rates. And I am sure that locating in SE Kentucky lets them pay us even less. The median income in LC is about 5 thousand less than the Kentucky average.(And then to think that they can then levy a wage assessment, that makes my blood boil!)

Prevailing wages are not living wages, however. That single mom with 2 kids would have to make just under $16 dollars an hour in LC Kentucky to make a living wage.

Now, I know that those jobs will help create other jobs...and so on...but we need to be realistic about this and know that they are not doing this just because we are just such wonderful people with a wonderful location and they want to bless us with this great opportunity.

Bottom line, they chose to come here because they can pay us less than almost anywhere else in the country...and they only offer that much because the federal contract requires it.

Paula Thompson, executive assistant with the Industrial Authority office, said the jobs offered by General Dynamics include a variety of positions including several positions in human resources, deputy director, trainer, quality specialist, program office assistant, and several supervisory positions in customer service areas.

“This is a call center, not a collection center,” Thompson said.“It is working to help people with Medicaid issues and is called a benefit support center.”

Hourly wages start at $12.51 per hour with full benefits, Thompson added.- See more at: http://www.sentinel-echo.com/local/x541274992...

Does anyone know what they are actually paying?

Does anyone know anything about a company called Serco? While I was doing a little searching I came across this company hire for several positions in Corbin. I read that they are going to handle the paper forms for the new healthcare laws.

Guess where they are setting up locations for this:

Alabama, Arkansas and Kentucky

Why those locations? LOL!

When the information was provided at the job fair, they revealed that the pay for csr's is 10.50 an hour. It seems it always turns out that the initial information about the pay is incorrect.

10.50 minus the 5% wage assessments would leave 9.975. Still above minimum wage. With these high gas prices it wouldn't be good for those who don't live in or near London.

As stated before, that is why they are here. They can pay us less than almost anywhere else in the country. We have one of the lowest prevailing wages rates in the country.

Serco is one company that handles paper forms for the ACA and they are locating in Alabama, Arkansas and Kentucky. They say it is because those states could work with setting up places faster and had a ready work force. BS.

I believe they are two different operations. GD will be a call center and Serco was given a contract to process paper forms so I am guessing that might be more data entry.

Yep you are right because Republicans take more pride in actually working and you are right that they are the ones most likely on unemployment because they had a job at one point in the first place and are going back to work and not sitting on their fat butts drawing a check and taking pills their medical card is preferable to them. There is a reason a neighboring county has the fattest men in the nation, they do nothing but sit on welfare and draw a check rather than work. Unemployment is a form of welfare and it sucks off the people who are working and paying in. People should be getting a job if they can.

Let me ask - do you work??? It seems like you have plenty of time to post on these boards. Or are you just a democrat donkey that sits back and thinks Obama will take care of you and you will keep drawing your check.

It will be people like you who won't have a clue what to do and couldn't help yourself get out the street when there are no jobs AND NO WELFARE because the REPUBLICANS have not jobs to work.

Who cares how the work is coming in, people should be grateful for jobs no matter how long they last. Anything in this area over 10.00/hr is not bad. Get your butts to work and quit complaining.
