The odd thing is that the picture shows an Aldi store and yet the news article doesn't mention any store by name.

Four major supermarket chains operating in Britain are withdrawing a number of beef products after horse DNA was found in frozen burgers sold in the UK and Ireland by Aldi, Iceland, Lidl and Tesco.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI), which made the discovery, said the burgers were produced by two processing plants in Ireland, Liffey Meats and Silvercrest Foods, and Dalepak Hambleton in the UK.

That wasn't here in America. But it makes you wonder just what is in the food you eat no matter where you buy it. Kroger's, Walmarts, in restaurants, or anywhere.

I have to agree with facts on the no telling what we are being sold especially in the packages that are prepacked from the meat processing plant.
Horse meat being mixed with hamburger doesnt make any sense at all. The documentaries I have watched about horses being slaughtered for food tell me that horse meat is quite a bit more expensive than beef. It doesnt make sense economically for any company to do that intentionally. I can only assume if horse dna was found in beef products the equipment used to process the different types of meat wasnt cleaned properly or maybe the company was sabotaged. We will probably never know for sure what happened with this.
The sad part is it could be happening in America too. Time will tell.

I'd imagine it could be a profitable venture to take away dead pet horses for a price, then turn around and sell 'hamburger meat' for a price.

Horse meat as human food is legal in Mexico. It's also legal in the United States to slaughter horses and package horse meat for export to other countries as food.

That changed. The GOP legislators in Washington teamed together and slipped in an amendment to a unrelated bill which changed the ban. It's now legal to kill horses for a food product as long as it's for export to other countries.

Even with the 2006 ban what has been happening is they load horses into livestock trucks and ship them live to Mexico to be killed for meat or animal feed. There needs to be a ban on exporting horses for purposes of killing them for that. It would be hard for the Government to enforce it but I have no doubt horse-lovers, activists, and animal-rights groups would keep close watch and supply evidence of violations.

Btw, guys, when in Mexico and eating at cheaper resturaunts or in rural down-country areas always ask what's in the taco you're about to order. If they say meat ..... ask what kind.

In America horses somehow managed to pass the cuteness test. It's against the law to eat anything cute or fuzzy.

Can't blame this one on Bush.

The Washington Times

Wednesday, November 30, 2011

"President Obama last month quietly signed into law a spending bill that restores the American horse-slaughter industry, just a few months after a government investigation said the ban on slaughtering was backfiring.

But the Agriculture spending bill Mr. Obama signed the week before Thanksgiving dropped the prohibition on inspections, and the administration said it now stands ready to conduct them should anyone open a horse-slaughter plant."

Did you look to see who's bill it was? The part about slaughtering horses was by the GOP.
