Moving to Corbin soon with my family and will have a child going into 2nd grade next school year. I'm wondering what the best school is for her? Probably going to be in Corbin Primary/Oak Grove area but could pay if necessary for another school if there is something better

So, please can you tell me which is the best school for primary kids around here
Thanks

Both schools are great for this area...corbin schools would be a better choice if you are going to be in the city. But whitley schools are very good as well.

Just my opinion - thanks. Do you have a child or relative at either one? Which do you prefer and why?
Thanks for helping

I have had children attend both Corbin city and Oak Grove. Hands down i prefer Oak Grove it is a wonderful school with great teachers. The main thing i do not like about Corbin is i feel that it is very political if you or your relatives are not "somebody" your kids may not get treated the same as the ones who are. This is strictly my opinion that is the experience that i have had.

I have spent time in both districts. Oak Grove is a very good school for the County system. The problem is that the kids eventually have to go to the Middle School which is a disaster. Corbin is a smaller, tighter knit system. It is a very high achieving district. Actually one of the top five in the state almost year in and year out. FYI, only one county system in the state is rated in the Top 5 systems and that is Boyle Co. The other 4 are Independents. And don't fall for tho political garbage. Whitley Co is probably the most political in the state. The number of teachers that are related to someone that ranks above them is crazy. Both have their place. The main choice for me would be distinguished school system vs non-distinguished.

Yes i have a son that goes to corbin. He has never been treated poorly or unfair. The reason i chose corbin was because of how close all the schools are. I myself went to whitley county and i also have two relatives that teach at whitley. One at oak grove and one at the middle school. Honestly i didn't want my child to ride a bus from corbin to williamsburg for whitley. I am very happy with the education he recieves at corbin.

Ive had my daughter which is now 20 go to oak grove. She then went to corbin starting middle school. I now have my 7yr old in oak grove. Later in middle school i will move him to corbin. Oak grove is the best elementary school to me around here. As a child i also went there and graduated from whitley high. You wont be let down by oak grove at all.
Choose Oak Grove

Both are good schools. I believe that the middle school choice is not close, as Corbin easily has the best middle school in the area.

Oak Grove is by far the better school for Pre-School - 6th. After that..... CORBIN all the way.

I have a child in second grade at Corbin Primary. My husband was in the army, therefore we have moved a lot but I have never seen a better place for my kids. The teachers and staff are wonderful and will give your child individual attention while allowing them to work at their own pace. The techonlogy is wonderful and the facility is new, clean and up to date. The only complaint I have with Corbin Primary is that they only go through 2nd grade, I wish my kids could spend more time there! good luck!

Some oak grove teachers send kids to Corbin. Reason.....you don't want them to go to whitley middle or high. Oak grove is a good school but not better than Corbin. I would just start them there instead of switching in middle.

I went through the same thing when I was first sending my son to school in corbin. I drive every morning to take him to Corbin primary, it has the best test scores and is best for his future at this time, however, this is a school that will look down on any thing you have hidden in the closet. I feel that this is also good for my son, he is learning that people are ignorant to anything that does not directly affect them. I feel that completing Corbin Primary is a great experience, then move on to another school that is more down to earth. Giving your child the experience they will need to cope with this horrable world that we have created for them. I hope I have choosen wisely, but the truth is that your guess is as good as any, and topix is not the place to ask. I never visit this site, I am just looking for something I was informed about, and I will not be back on this site. Please be smart, look for answeres in places where you can get an intilectual opinion, this is not it.

Corbin school has a "class system". you have to have money or a "name" to be treated fairly, there is a big snob appearance there. Oak Grove treats everyone the same, I have been in both schools and seen it all.

I would start my child where I wanted them to finish. I transferred right before middle school and it was hard at first. By 7th grade people has the friends and their clicks and the new person is always just there. I mean don't get me wrong I fit in I made friends and in the end I was glad that I switched schools. I wouldnt have went back and changed it for nothing. But it was hard at first.

very very true and if your parent is a teacher you get special favors. Teacher kids usually get all awards and scholarships. Somebody needs to do research and show this. Last year 5 out of 6 governor scholars were teachers kids or administrators.
