Moon Swoon: How 2013's Full Moons Got Their Peculiar Names

The first full moon of 2013 will light up the night sky tonight (Jan. 26), but did you know it's a full moon of many names?

Full moon names date back to Native American tribes of a few hundred years ago who lived in what is now the northern and eastern United States. Those tribes kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full moon. Their names were applied to the entire month in which each occurred.

There were some variations in the moon names, but, in general, the same ones were used throughout the Algonquin tribes from New England on west to Lake Superior. European settlers followed their own customs and created some of their own names. Since the lunar (or "synodic") month is roughly 29.5 days in length on average, the dates of the full moon shift from year to year.

Here is a listing of all of the full moon names, as well as the dates and times for 2013. Unless otherwise noted, all times are for the Eastern time zone:

Jan. 26, 11:38 p.m. EST —Full Wolf Moon:
March 27, 5:27 a.m. EDT —Full Worm Moon:
April 25, 3:57 p.m. EDT —Full Pink Moon
May 25, 12:25 a.m. EDT —Full Flower Moon
June 23, 7:32 a.m. EDT —Full Strawberry Moon

The biggest full moon of the year

July 22, 2:16 p.m. EDT—Full Buck Moon
Aug. 20, 9:45 p.m. EDT —Full Sturgeon Moon
Sept. 19, 7:13 a.m. EDT —Full Harvest Moon
Oct. 18, 7:38 p.m. EDT —Full Hunters' Moon
Nov. 17, 10:16 a.m. EST —Full Beaver Moon
Dec. 17, 4:28 a.m. EST —Full Cold Moon

http://news.yahoo.com/moon-swoon-2013s-full-m...

It has a discription for each moon. Ancient Wolf, I think you will enjoy it and know most of it already. I learned allot. And I am a Moonchild. lol

Be back!

This has been invigorating.

You've been sarcastic, yet not hateful.... That's a rare quality. Particularly on Topix.

Nope. It's your accusation. I've deleted nothing, I've told you that until YOU should be blue in the face.

Furthermore, I don't intend to be goaded into a backward search on your behalf. Post it, by all means.

You've got nine more, I'd assume. Take your time, hehe!

I forgot to tell you all something I saw on the news, yesterday I believe. It is about internet privacy and our web cams.

There is a virus out there that once you click a link, the person who sent it can view your home via your web cam. You inadvertently have given them access to your settings and they can spy on you no matter if you've got your computers web cam on or not. They can activate it remotely!!

Bedroom, bathroom, no matter. If your laptop is open, they could possibly see you. And hear you. Unless you cover your opening for the web cam or close the lid on your laptop, you could be a victim and not even know it!
(Or like me, keep a piece of paper over it to block the view)

They said the ONLY way to tell if you have this virus is to have a pro look at your OS.

Thankfully, I've had a piece of sticky note over mine for well over a year already when I'm not using it.

Are you absolutely sure that you're taking out your frustration on the right person? Anger at a rectum could very well hurt individuals who have nothing to do with the problem at the moment. You're not entirely fartless but one good chance may be all that you get. Save your best ammunition for more desperate times. The solution to what's bothering you is a lot smellier than you are making it.

On second thought, I think it was Nightline or 20/20 that I saw this story on...

They set up a family and spied on them via that virused link. Of course, doing so modestly...

Needless to say, I was stunned.. Not really surprised, but stunned nonetheless. Young people out there everywhere even innocently keep their laptops open in their bedrooms. Not to mention their desktop computers have the web cam sitting right on the desk in most cases!!

This story was frightening.

I agree with you to a point. I thoroughly enjoy our talks about everyday life, cooking with cast iron, visits with family and friends, and kind and reassuring support when we have had times of sorrow, loss of family/friends, or enduring a serious medical problem. I cherish those times and the friendships that I have made. But AB, think for a moment, please. We have talked about HAARP, chemtrails, prepping for disaster, fracking, bird die-offs, so on and so forth. I fail to see the difference between these subjects and the topics that I have introduced recently. If I follow your line of reasoning, then these topix should be avoided as well, because they lead to discussion of government, and that leads to "politics." Of course, I don't believe that; I'm just using an example. OJG has discussed issues in the middle East, and our foreign policy. We have talked about the SHTF, the Louisiana sink hole and why this has been hushed, chemicals in our food and water, gun control and the oddities of the Newtown, Conn. incident, and many more topics like this. That's what has made this thread so dynamic over the past two years. I'm not all gloom and doom, but I also know that just talking about feel-good topics will kill this thread faster than being overtaken by trolls. It is the variety of the posts that keep us near the top of the Topix threads.
In case you haven't noticed, I am trying my best to help keep the peace. I consider all you folks my friends, and it saddens me to see good people offended. That's it, plain and simple.
I agree with the talking about everyday life and I will do my best to stick to just that. Anytime people talk about politics and religion it brings the worse out in people, that is why I try my best to avoid it as you have seen for over 2 years. Plus, you know me through email and phone calls. You know I don't. You can keep trying to keep the peace and I respect you for trying, that is the person you are. Nothing said here will ever change my friendship with you, or our bird thread email group. We have come through a lot. We don't have to agree with everything. I'll still love you and wish the best.:)

And concerned for loved ones being spied on too.

By the way, "Dawn" is the only dish soap I keep here. It comes in handy for so many other things and isn't watered down like the rest. People think they're saving money on those others, but they're so watered down that you end up using three times as much in the long run.
I'd rather use laundry soap to do dishes in a pinch then buy those cheap brands..
(And I've actually done that before when I forgot to buy dish soap, lol).
I agree. I always have it. Been using it for years. Got other people using it to due to my passion for their efforts to clean the birds after oil spills and then it has lots of other uses beside the de-icing. You still have some after someone else has bought 3/4 bottles of the cheap watered down brand. Sometimes you really get what you pay for. That stuff has all kinds of uses. I will post the link.

DAWN WILL DONATE $500,000
TO HELP SAVE WILDLIFE THIS YEAR
Over the past year, Dawn donated a total of $500,000 ($250,000 each) to two wildlife organizations—The International Bird Rescue and The Marine Mammal Center (TMMC)—and we are thrilled with the amazing support we have received from thousands of Everyday Wildlife Champions just like you
