"Letvin says"he hopes government officials will work on a program to eliminate the rats and snails that carry the rat lungworm disease" sounds more of ignorance than scientific thinking. Snail and slug pellets (poison) are bought and spread about in my garden. I also periodically put out rat poison to kill rats on my coffee farm. Join the 21st century !!! or go back to the Third World and eat root crops fertilized with human waste !!!

Blogger anonymity is to blame for so-called 'Hippie's' uncouth behavior.
And all the swearing in response.

Eating slugs or snails is definitely hazardous to your health. 1-2 millimeters is really small!

Parasites are not laughing matters.

In a case like this, an unapproved Chinese preparation, Chitosan, might be considered. This ancient Chinese systemic remedy is used for Lyme disease by some. It is for that reason that I suggest it. Some historical information on Chitosan is available on www.allergyresearchgroup.com . Obviously conflicts with more conventional treatments and current health status must be considered.

I do not understand the lack of caring here. This is a serious illness and is no laughing matter. Shame. The family is suffering. The people posting here have no knowledge of this parasite and what it can do to them or how they can contract it. I just hope it does not happen to them because they have not taken preventative measures.

The reports so far indicate that this seems to be confined to Puna. Kind of odd, and possibly significant. Hope the DOH does an "epi" study on it to see if there's some kind of vector control that can be done to keep it from spreading.

Typical slug pellets use metaldehyde as the active ingredient, but it's toxic to pets and (to a much more limited extent) humans.

Iron phosphate is safer and apparently equally effective. If that doesn't qualify as organic, then strongly brewed coffee -- perhaps 1% caffeine -- poured on the soil around plants will repel the slugs it doesn't kill.

A good summary here that even mentions Hawaii's coqui war:

DDT was labeled as a persistent organic pollutants by the Stockholm Convention. In simple language it stays around for a long time poisoning everything. The interesting thing too is that mosquitoes often the target of DDT spraying mutate to the poison becoming resistant.

DDT ainít usually used as a slug poison.

It would be extremely helpful if we could see photos of the particular slug species as well as the larvae.

Rather than just hope they do an "epi" on it, is there some way if we can find out if they are in fact doing anything, if so, what, and what are their recommendations? What are the earliest detectable symptoms to be on the watch for?

Please be considerate of the family and friends of those who are suffering. There's plenty of anecdotal "evidence" to support whichever side of the organic/GMO argument that you're on, and using the critical illness of folks to say "I told you so" is selfish and insensitive.

This is what I did to combat slugs and all of God's nasty parasites and the like that make this prison planet a "survival of the fittest" ordeal; I grow vegetables up off the ground about hip high in five gallon grow pots producing more than I can eat...then the fun part is stomping the God produced snails flat...Isn't God supposed to love his children? I only see pain and suffering in this world..."O well" back to slapping mosquitoes dead as a past time to stay alive as I read about God's son Bernie Madoff the biggest parasite know to man that we can't do anything about, go figure?
