The Woodlands, TX The Woodlands Pokemon League has once again been selected to host the Pokemon Regional Championships, a trading card game tournament offering thousands of dollars in scholarships and prizes. The championship will be part of the Pokemon Celebration being planned at The Woodlands College Park High School on Saturday, April 18, 2009.
The event is free and open to everyone regardless of age or experience. Players who arrive without their own deck of cards will be allowed to participate with the use of a loaner deck on site.
The doors will open at 9:00 am for registration and pre-tournament activities.
Pokémon Regional Championships offer players the opportunity to win scholarships and other prizes while playing a fun game of Pokemon. Last year, Pokémon USA, Inc., a worldwide leader in trading card games, and a subsidiary of Nintendo, awarded approximately $300,000 in scholarships at various events in the US.
In addition to the scholarships, other prizes include trips to the National Championships, trophies, lots of Pokémon cards and a variety of exclusive Pokémon items. Players are divided into three divisions: Junior Division (born in 1998 or later), Senior Division (born in 1994, 1995, 1996 or 1997), and Masters Division (born in 1993 or earlier). Prizes are awarded to the top sixteen players in each age group. Each division will have a regional champ.
Participants of the tournament will receive a Pokemon Regional Championships promo card and commemorative pin, the latest copy of Pokemon Collector Magazine, a Pokemon character figure, and the opportunity to participate in a variety of Pokemon Celebration activities and win additional Pokemon prizes. There will be numerous items given out through raffles, which all participants are eligible for. Another exciting event is the Pokemon Art Contest, as the winning entry will be featured in an upcoming issue of the Beckett Pokemon Collector Magazine.
The event will also feature a New Player Area open from 9:00 to 10:30 am with Pokemon League Leaders available to teach and assist new players before the tournament. To learn and practice playing before the big day, players are invited to attend their local Pokemon league, where league leaders and senior members will be able to help. At league, members are able to battle with each other for fun and practice, and earn points towards league rewards.
There are two Pokemon Leagues in The Woodlands. The Tuesday League meets from 5:00 to 7:30 pm on Tuesdays at the Burger King on Gosling (at Research Forest), and the Wednesday League meets from 5:00 to 7:30 pm on Wednesdays at the James Coney Island on Sawdust Road. The leagues are also free, open to everyone, and offer the opportunity for members to make friends and practice playing.
