Rail has been mishandled from the beginning. A vote should have been taken before Lingle signed the enormous tax increase into law. That tax is really hurting our economny. Rail is now dead.

Rail pollutes more than cars that get better than 31 mpg. By the time rail gets built, cars will be much more efficient than that. Stop following the sheep and learn the facts.
YOu must work for the oil company. That is exactly why the mainland US is in such a mess over gas. They allowed the rail system to die in favor of cars when gas was 30 cents a gallon. Look around, almost every advanced country in the world has excellent passenger rail service, except guess who.

Honolulu cannot afford rail...we have adeclining population and the tax is just too much. There are many solutions short of rail and only the desperation of unions hoping to grab hold of lucrative contracts as our economy implodes keeps this thing going. That and the slezy Democratic-corportist-develope r nexus.

What other solutions? Name 4. Can't can you? Declining population? Just Honolulu the CITY. The suburbs are growing. Desperation? Says who? You? SO far you're 0 for 3 : that means you've struck out. BTW... if you don't like the tax, move to Vegas.

Rail is NOT dead. As a matter of fact, it most likely will be built. If you don't like it, MOVE OUT OS STATE. Otherwise stop whining like an old bat. Nuff said.

What are you smoking? Cars will NOT be required to have a FLEET average of over 30 MPG until after 2015. FLEET average: ACROSS the board, OVERALL gas mileage. Right now the MPG req is 21. Get real

I'm all for profits, when they are honest ones. What seems wrong, is giving the impression that the rail project is going to be quiet, or look good, or that it will get a large percentage of drivers off the roads, and allow rail riders to zip quickly to work and play. Those things aren't really going to happen. What we know for sure is that the cost to build, operate and maintain rail will be enormous, and a burden on taxpayers for generations to come.
What do you care? You spend more time in Seden than the ice flows. BTW, who said it was "...giving the impression that the rail project is going to be quiet, or look good, or that it will get a large percentage of drivers off the roads, and allow rail riders to zip quickly to work and play." ? You did. No one else, Except for the MORONS at STRN.

Just one solution is enuff. The $9.0 Billion Rail and massive grid-lock will occur simultaneously as stated by the mayor and the City's AA and will cost $9.0 Billion over 15 years. NO Traffic relief undere RAIL!!!!!

A sensible solution is to build a separate, elevated, Express Busway which bypasses the two chokepoints on H-1 (Pearl City and Middle Street Merge) which will cost less than $800 million and will reduce traffic congestion on H-1 by 35 percent.
More former car drivers will be using the faster, non-stop. less transfer, almost “door-to-door” Express Buses commuting from each West Oahu community to Pearl Harbor, downtown and beyond. Less cars will be entering downtown, less parking problems.
Based on Oahu population projection, the Express Busway Mass Transit System will be adequate for the next 30 to 40 years.

Majority has already spoken, they're in favor of the rail. Opponents can't even get 40000 signatures, that's a FACT. So stop crying!
The true Silent Majority hasn't really spoken up yet and they might not agree with you on rail. SRN is the small tip of an anti-tax-and-spend iceberg. They are academics, entirely anti-rail, and associated with Republicans, so many people wouldn't sign even if they don't want The Rail Tax Guzzler. STAY TUNED! You may be holding the hankie yourself before too long. Aloha!

If the proposed rail project is going to be run by the same kind of beaurocracies who take care of Oahu's roads, sewers, landfills, bus, public schools, economic development, homeless, and the cleanliness of Hawaii's ocean, reefs and streams -- BEWARE. Hold on a minute. Think before you act. Etc.

good rail needs to be voted on.

I think we should do away with suv's. We should have more electrical cars. The ones that are good for the environment. We should have more buses for bus lines that are busy only. I think that will help the traffic.

I don't want to pay more taxes if I don't have to. Especially because I won't ride rail transit 4-5 times a week. Maybe 1-2 times a month. I work close to my house.

To all the politicians-

be humble and do what's best- listen to the people and see what we all vote for.

Let the people be responsible for this situation.

I still think that the company who will be building this rail transit should give us a huge discount because we live on an island.(small population)

Can't we get funds from other sources besides our taxes?

Oh well hoping for the best.

I'm with you on all this. However, thinking that Parson's is going to give anyone a break is futile. They are in it for the profits, like any business. They will soon discover that Hawaii doesn't want this particular rail system though, and either adjust accordingly, or go elsewhere to sell their wares.

If rail stood any chance of being profitable, business would build and maintain it with their own money. That isn't how it goes with mass transit. I think that NYC is the only city that has a rail system that substantially pays for itself. They have a huge population and a rail infrastructure that has been around for ages.

Maybe with the entry of Ann Kobayashi into the Mayoral race, there will be more substantial discussion of alternatives to rail. Oahu doesn't have an adequate Bus system yet, never mind synchronized traffic lights and federally approved solutions to bottlenecks. Stay tuned!
