For most people, a gun would do little good, but I'd rather them have one than not. Most people would miss with a handgun anyways, but at least they would have a chance. Even trained policemen miss from four feet away sometimes. I'm against the laws that intimidate homeowners from shooting thieves, because it makes them hesitate shooting a thug. To me, a thug gives up all his rights the second he enters someone else's property.

OK. So you have provided a complete fictional hypothetical. Now provide a a real world example where a homeowner was charged for protecting his residence against a thug[s].

If you can't, then continue on living in your fictional, hypothetical, world.

Good point. The average cop shoots at a target only 6 feet away and misses 50% of the time. I once saw a scene when 20 cops here were firing away at a moving car on BOTH SIDES of the car and didn't hit the guy in the car. The cops were on both sides of the street firing into the windows and through them just missing the other cops on the other side of the street. NOBODY was hit, not even the driver. Where the dozens of bullets went is anyone's guess...into the houses on both sides of the street. The Captain was yelling at them to stop and to watch their crossfire and it took them 10 seconds to stop. This was on TV here about 2 years ago. How nobody got hit and the cops missed each other is amazing.

"This was on TV here about 2 years ago. How nobody got hit and the cops missed each other is amazing."

Was it the hit series "24" or was it "Law and Order SVU."

If your fairy tale actually occurred, you would have posted a source or a link, but you didn't.

It was a real event, Moron, It was all over the news. It was a black Suburban, driven by a drug dealer. It was a great example of how things go south once the shooting starts. Guru, we had the same problem in the military. Once the shooting begins, people would expend all their ammunition.

One time I had to run up to a machine gunner and break his ammo belt off to get him to stop shooting. His gun was pointing at the ground and he was hitting the ground directly in front of himself. He spun around, and almost shot my feet off. He had been hit in the wrist and the bullet had traveled up his arm and exited his elbow, tearing his arm open and he didn't even know it.

Stumpy - if you or the one you admire so deeply cannot provide a source or a link to the actual event, then you're lying in concert.

Having a gun, but not practicing to the point of proficiency is much more dangerous to the gun owner than any potential intruder.
"Gun control" means hitting your target, and only your target.

An intruder is in grave danger if the gun owner knows what he/she is doing, and can access the gun and ammo quickly. It is therefore in the interest of the state to allow gun ownership, while also providing opportunities and incentives for owners to become proficient in the use of firearms, in addition to encouraging understanding of the laws regulating guns and gun ownership. Gun clubs and ranges should therefore be supported in every community as a focal point of responsible firearm ownership and use.

You may no be old enough to remember this, but marksmanship was taught in the schools before, using .22's. I'd fully back a womens' handgun program", and license them to carry and give them liberal legal consideration if they are ever involved in a domestic shooting. It's time to step back in time to when people used common sense. The liberals have over-sissified America for fifty years and the adults need to take over again.

I think the lack of government supported civilian marksmanship programs is contributing to the proliferation of "gun crazies" and eroding the Second Amendment.
Keeping guns out of the hands of people like the Adam Lanza involves requiring participation in marksmanship and gun support groups. Otherwise, people self-train and don't secure weapons the way they should. Lanza had access to his mom's guns, and I'd be willing to bet if she had some outside support in securing during the weeks leading to the shooting at Sandy Hook, she'd, he'd and they'd be alive, and none of us would have heard of Sandy Hook Elementary.
The gun laws being proposed now would not have prevented this tragedy.
