the 'amber alert' system was in place before our latest technologies, such as cell phones. the same device the "ominous text message" was sent via her phone.
UPDATE THE SYSTEM, make exceptions!!
bunch of crap there isn't an amber alert for this girl.
i bet there would be if she were a johnson county girl, or white....(and not from belton).
best of wishes for her family and safe recovery.

This is outrageous. How can this not qualify for an Amber Alert. Any 14 year old missing with no history of running away, and suspected of being held against her will should be basis enough for an Amber Alert. I know it costs money and manpower hours, but why would you waste precious time? Something is very wrong here. I personally am going to do all I can to get the word out to as many people as possible, but it is not enough!!

No Amber alert issued. Are you kidding??? This little girl's life is just as precious as anyone else' life. Get on the stick "Police". You are wasting precious time.

I can think of no better time to issue an Amber Alert! A child who was only suppose to cross the street is gone without a trace? So...somebody has to actually witness an abduction for an Amber Alert to be issued? I guess I need to study up on Amber Alert criteria.

We should get off the amber alert drama and be thankful that a little girl was found. But, now we need to know why she left or was she taken.

What is wrong with this girl? Does she know how many man hours could of been wasted looking for her pulling a prank like that that could have been used in real crimes and worried her parents to death? I believe she should be fined or atleast given community service for pulling something so ignorant.

I wish that they could issue an Amber Alert for every time something like this occurs but the problem with that is kids will abuse it. They may only be looking for attention. I agree with the police for not issuing an Amber Alert. For those of you that are outraged about not issuing an Amber Alert keep in mind that we don't know all the facts of what happened. I'm sure police had good reason not to issue the alert because things weren't adding up.

I realize now, after reviewing Amber Alert criteria, that the parents and police had a suspicion that the teen wasn't in real danger in this case. Just glad she's home now and I would guess there will be some consequences for her actions.

I can think of a few reasons not to issue an Amber Alert...for one, even the father thought it was fishy, two it didn't meet the criteria...there was no vehichle description, no lead as to who may have kidnapped her...that's what an Amber Alert is for... to get vehicle and perpatrator information out...media was already getting the girl's info out. They set up criteria for this reason...hoaxs.

I understand that the dad is relieved, his anger replaced by relief. But, there needs to be some sort of punishment. KCPD was tied up for hours with this hoax, which cost the taxpayers lots of money. I prefer that my money be spent fighting real crimes, not some teenager's childish prank. That girl has some issues to work out. But, my guess is.....nothing will be done. Since the dad is "so relieved that she's back", he'll ignore the big issue.

Another sad aspect of this is that people are going to become immune to the urgency of what an Amber Alert really is. Like the boy who cried wolf too many times, people will begin to start ignoring real Amber Alerts with possibly dire consequences. I know it wasn't issued in this case and although it seemed like a good idea to do it at the time, I'm somewhat glad it wasn't.

And Lexi, your comment was totally uncalled for. It is not relevant to the discussion at hand at all. I could make an assumption about you based on where you live, but that would bring me way down to your level and I never want to be there. Please stick to the topic at hand.

I think the Jackson County Court should bring charges against Beauty Smith for providing her parents with a false abduction report. Anyone be that adult or minor that provides false reports are forcing authorities to waste valuable resources where there is no crime. There are true legitimate crimes being committed and that is where those sources should be used. As a taxpaying citizen I will be appalled if there are no consequences for Beauty's actions. If she gets by with this, what lesson will she learn and what message are we sending out to others? Let justice prevail and I'm not talking about just a slap on the wrist.
