Its about time someone thought of a use like this for these buildings. No sense in having them shut down or razed. As many schools as KCMO is going to close, there should be enough space to house many, many homeless people in the KC area.

I don't think that they should close any schools, if they do then they will complain about the over crowded. but should they close any schools then they should use it for homeless shelters. We have more homeless people sleeping under bridges than any where else. If you do get into a shelter you have to fight to get into one

All well and good, but, who is going to pay for all of this? My guess is, us, the tax payers. Aren't we strapped enough, just look how KCMO is going broke. Hold onto your wallet, this is going to get bumpy.

Who's going to convert these old buildings to living spaces?
Who's going to administer the operations on these homeless shelters?
Who's going to fund the remodeling, utilities, upkeep, personnel, furniture, security, food services, etc for these shelters? Get the Feds to pony up and I’d be all for it. I just don’t think these old buildings would work well for low income housing.

Like I said before, turn them into correctional facilities and quit the non-sence of "Suspended Execution of Sentence". They are going to get our money regardless, at least we might live a little safer.

Hope they will find good uses for these old buildings. They certainly don't need to be torn down when more shelters are needed and people need jobs, too.

Wasn't the point of closing the schools to save money? This would cost way more then the 50 millon they say they would save.

Sign me up--I would like to take my family and live for free(free shelter-free food-free clothes-free everything)---but wait-I went out and got myself a JOB--and I feel better about paying my own way.

I am a nurse in the kansas City area and am currently working at an adult day care facility. This is a medical model facility where we care for anyone over 18 that can not be at home by themselves. We have many different diagnosis, ranging from cerebral palsey to dementia. We have been in a facilty for many years where the roof has leaked for so long due to ill repair that it is no longer a place we would like to stay. (Many thanks to a bad landlord) I think it would be quite nice to have access to one of these schools to have the daycare. It would be an optimal place to care for our clientele. They would be safe and there would be plenty of room to grow.

They should turn them into prisons, because that city is loaded with trash.

This isn't just building homes for 2000 kids. It's building homes for 2000 kids families. It would take many many buildings. The burden would shift for the maintenance of these buildings from the schools to the city. And the cost would be astronomical for the conversion. Wouldn't this just be another name for the projects though? And wouldn't the security be expensive? But if the money could be found, by all means, do it.

Question? What was the lifespan of Wayne Minor buildings, start to destroyed? 20 years? It doesn't take long to destroy something, when you were not 'raised' to take care of property.

The Pastor at Forest Avenue Family Shelter has always dreamed for many years of acquiring the abandoned Bancroft School at 4300 Tracy, K.C., MO 64110. He has a deep desire to turn the huge neighborhood blight into an enriching community strength.
The plan is to use an abandoned school for a multi-purpose center. A multi-purpose center would include: an urban training center; a school program for homeless women and women with children; a before and after school program; and a sports and talent program for youth at risk.
We have submitted proposals, in the past, only to be turned down because of our lack of purchase power. However, our volunteer base is such that we have the knowledge, the skill, and the volunteers to create and operate a functioning multi-purpose center if given the chance.

So...let me get this straight. They have a budget shortfall so they are closing these schools mainly to save money right?

So how is converting these schools into a homeless shelter going to be saving money?
