I've got to agree with the original poster, no matter what the locals may think of their beloved city, a lot of newcomers see it as far inferior to wherever they came from.
I did something about it though, after being stuck there due the economy for 3 hellish years, I got out of there! One month of freedom so far. I will always look back and regret the years I had to spend there as wasted.
For some people it is not as simple as gathering up some moving boxes and getting the eff out. If it was I suspect your city would be much smaller population-wise. And I would've left about two months after arriving.
And in case anyone wants to call this an ill-informed rant, let me list the things I hated the most about KC, so you may see where I am coming from:
1. Earnings Tax (this is insanity to a newcomer)
2. Personal Property Taxes (so is this! ludicrous to pay every year on a car you already paid a sales tax on!)
3. God-awful summer weather
4. Traffic/Drivers (it's like ten levels of hell down from other midwestern cities)
5. Local overreaction to snow/ice
6. Abysmal customer service in fast food restaurants
7. Jayhawk fans (holy crap no one cares about your school except you--shut up!)
8. Local news is unwatchable, just one long crime log
9. Local newspaper is a joke, unreadable for national or world news that isn't completely slanted.(Columnists and Editorial board are ridiculous!)
10. Insistence on being called the bbq capital. I had never heard this before I arrived, tried every 'famous' bbq place in town and was only impressed with OK Joe's which isn't even in KC.

Your comments are welcome! I'm very sad to hear that you feel unaccepted in the Kansas City Metro area, but you seem to have a survivor attitude, which will get you far in this sometimes cold world. Good luck and I hope you can soon get back to your east coast surroundings and be richer because of your travels.
If you are in Claycomo, drop in at the El Sombrero and say hi to Larry and Matt (before 3 pm)and tell them a good friend of theirs sent you!
Wow, it has been a while since I was on this site and a lot has changed since my orginal comments. Thanks SO much for the kind words from Village Idiot. It is so sweet to react so positively to my previous comments. I never got around to seeing your friend at El Sombrero. I ended up moving for a job in May....be careful what you wish for, right? I am now in Houston and must admit that I miss the relaxed and quiet lifestyle that Missouri offered. It is amazing what you miss when you are gone :). You realy have to find good in every place you live...because every place has something good to offer. Thanks again for the welcoming comments...and I am so sad that I never got to see Larry and Matt. Thanks again for being so positive and kind.

Kansas city is super boring its not the same as it was in the late 90s and early 2000s there is hardly anything to do for people who are 18-24 and another thing why is more restaurants than hangout places(the mall, clubs, arcades, etc) i also notice how rural Kansas city is compared to major cities like new york and L.A. I guess who want to raise a family in a quite city than Kansas city is your city anything else is meh.

There are so many companies here that will assist you in moving to another state. Go online and you will be able to see videos of any apartment/house in any state that suits you. Information regarding location, transportation, shopping, schools etc., This information is given to you by a person who was born and raised in Missouri.
We are quite content and happy about living here. Perhaps if you would remove that large chip on your shoulder, you would see the hostility is coming from you. Why don't you read the history of the midwest. Find out for yourself the part my state played in making it possible for so much of what was to be America.
Keep in mind, there all kinds of transportation that you can use to leave KC. Trains, planes and the bus!
Unfortunately, it is very expensive to move and with the job market and economy like they are, it is very risky. It isn't as easy as you say.

Kansas city is also very Conservative probably because Missouri is in the middle of the bible belt i notice their is discrimination against the LGBT community in places like the power & light and somewhat racial discrimination in the plaza area and some of you guys are little bit weird

And you're now living in Spencer, Iowa?!?! Holy crap, that isn't even on Google Maps is it?? hahaha Well, at least in lovely Spencer, there are no local newscasts, no traffic, no fast food restaurants, and no local newspaper (unless you count the flyer Aunt Tilly posted at the local cafe) for you to moan and groan about! Enjoy the smell of cow poo in the morning, ya idjit! I'll take KC over Spencer any day of the year. And YES I've actually been to both.

Well I googled I hate Kansas City and this topic came up.
I have lived here a little over one year and absolutely hate living here. It's great that some people love it here, I don't get it, but wish I could!
I agree about the locals here. Unfriendly and unwelcoming to newcomers. Trying to find good in KC is pretty hard to do. No matter how much one tries.
I've learned I'm stuck here for a few more years but choose to avoid any interaction with the locals. The saving grace is when friends visit from out of town but when they leave it goes back to usual days surround by dismal denizens.
I also feel like KC has more of a I don't wanna attitude than a can do attitude, which is example in how the city itself is a shell.

You don't control a damn thing. You just inhabit the shithole known as the Prospect Corridor. The suburbs of KC are great places. The only shitholes are the ones that blacks have infected with their lazy, welfare grubbing, drug dealing, solve all their problems with guns, baet up their women while they pimp them out, crap. You don't control a damn thing. If anything the city controls you as we have kept you contained in the shitholes you created.

I was stationed at Richards-Gebaur AFB many years ago. I thought KC was OK.I found plenty of woment ot date, lots of place to goout too and things to do.

Yeah ther was crime and drugs all the stuff you have in big cities but KC was not that bad.

I know they had some diferent kinds of taxes back then but I was not effected by them that much.
