Single-terminal layout at KCI remains top recommendation

Full story: Kansas City Star

Last summer, some travelers howled when a consultant suggested replacing Kansas City International Airport's three terminals with one.

I hope we get a central terminal. Only chance we can have of luring a major airliner to create a hub in KC. This would create hundreds of not thousands of jobs, and give us more changes for direct flights. It also increases the likeleyhood of international flights coming as well.

Keep the 3 terminals and the parking garages where they are. Have people movers run through a giant ring to each individual garage and a new central security checkpoint. All we need is one track. Cars can be linked together and designated for people that have not been screened, and people that have been. Since the cars are constantly moving, the volume of people should be at a bare minimum at the checkpoint. Those cars will be seperate from eachother to where a person cannot move from car to car to restrict movement from the unsecured cars. Once the person exits screening, they enter back onto the people mover to their terminal. Now what's cool about this is that the person can still park their cars at the terminal they will return to, so that they don't have to move back through the central security checkpoint.

The current configuration for KCI is fine. No one needs to shop for clothes or handbags at an airport. You don't need 5 Star restaurants at the airport. Add more food courts and better way to shuttle people between terminals if they have to change airlines to make connections. C terminal already has international flights. Work out a deal with an airline and then build a 4th concourse for them. The ability to get out of a vehicle, check your bags (depending on airline) at the curb & get your boarding pass, walk 30 feet to the gate, go thru security and then walk another 20' to your departure gate beats the he11 out of airports like Atlanta, Las Vegas & Detroit.

I agree Kevin, I have flown all over the US and have never encountered an airport like the one in my home town. The original designers must have been asleep at the wheel when they proposed such a layout, and brain damage can only explain the County accepting such a plan. A single terminal would not only make it easier to change airlines but we would see more businesses opening up in the terminal. When you fly into any other major city, not that Kansas City is one, layovers can allow you the opportunity to eat at local restaurants located in the terminal. It would be nice to see a Gates and other KC favorites being introduced to travelers as they are stuck in one more airport for three hours .
