Let’s be clear about the persons and interests that are behind the Hawaii Superferry.

The Board of Directors of the Hawaii Superferry reads like a roster of revolving door ex-military officials. Like John F. Lehman, former Secretary of the Navy and founder of the investment firm JF Lehman, a company that specializes in investing in military industries with a controlling interest in the Superferry.

Lehman is associated with the Heritage Foundation, the notorious Right Wing think tank that intellectually and politically influenced such anti-Native Hawaiian and anti-environmental groups as the Grassroots Institute, Pacific Legal Foundation and Aloha for All. He is also associated with the Project for a New American Century, the folks that cooked up the illegal and catastrophic occupation of Iraq and a blueprint for U.S. Empire (well, they euphemistically called it “Pax Americana”).

Lehman proudly announced that the Hawaii Superferry would partner with the military as a “Westpac Express” to shuttle Strykers and other military personnel and equipment between islands and beyond. The first Westpac Express was a contract between the U.S. military and the Austal Corporation, makers of the Superferry, to move U.S. military personnel and equipment around Australia and Southeast Asia.

According to testimony from Sean Connaughton, Maritime Administrator of the U.S. Department of Transportation before the House Subcommittee on Seapower and Expeditionary Forces of the Armed Services Committee (March 15, 2007), U.S. taxpayers subsidized $140 million of the $180 million price tag for two Superferries through Title XI loan guarantees.

Connaughton said that “Although the Administration has not requested funding for new loan guarantees since 2001, Congress has periodically appropriated money for this purpose.” He seemed to suggest that the Superferry was another pork barrel earmark project.

Further he stated,“The ferries are also militarily useful and [Transportation Command] has expressed an interest in them. The Hawaii SuperFerry vessels will be offered for enrollment in the Voluntary Intermodal Sealift Agreement, or VISA, program.”

Like the Strykers and the UARC, the Superferry is a conspiracy by politicians, the military and corporations to impose their profit and military driven agendas on Hawai‘i over the opposition of affected communities and regardless of the ultimate costs, consequences and impacts. Kaua‘i’s powerful assertion of their right to live in peace and protect their island from invasive and destructive forces is an example we can all learn from.

Read the article. I bet the Kanaka Ma'oli get pissed off with this one. Haole boy claiming that "Kamehameha couldn't conquer us, and neither will HSF".
First of all Kauai surrendered. Kamehameha didn't have to conquer you dolt. Didn't you take Hawaiian history in school? Oh yeah. You not from Hawaii. Larry Price pulled that card on Hoosier already.

Second of all, you might want to think your words through carefully. Like it or not Mr. Hoepner, you are a haole making statements about Kamehameha conquering the islands. Not saying it's right, but you gonna piss off a lot of people. Just a little suggestion.

Third... Mr. Hoepner needs to remember that it was the violent tactics of the PROTESTERS that turn Nawiliwili harbor into a "war zone" He has no one to blame but his own people for that. If that protest was a peaceful protest, there would be no security zone needed.

Did we once or a few times over the years import sand from the outer island to replenish our sand on Waikiki Beach? Where were the protestors then? Sounds like someone has a double standard when it comes to endangered species being transmitted from island to island.

It's ok to be safe like keeping rabies out of Hawaii, but times has improved and the animals don't have to suffer in isolation for three months like before.

If the same effort was to keep drugs out of Hawaii, it would be a healthier and safer place. The protesters should use the courts. This is where the battle is, not in the watere - after the fact. I give the Homeland Security Forces a lot of credit for their restraint.

I give the protesters credit for their beliefs but your violence never solves anything. This is still America where the majority still rules.

Bottom Line: Supperferry doesn't run until an EIS is done. They jumped the gun with the governors blessing. They just didn't listen which is the reason why the state and the Superferry is in this mess. No one else is to blame but the governonr her administration and the Superferry, pure and simple. The blowing of smoke with doom and gloom for the investors is all shibai! We need to know in the next few weeks or we'll have to leave the state! Shibai! Mr. Garibaldi was quoted on televison saying that the Superferry could weather the storm. Well it looks like one heck of a hurricane for Mr. Garibaldi and your multi-million dollar investors.

The governor is yet again trying to blow smoke. People are writing letters that they are canceling their vacations here because they are afraid of whats going with the Superferry. LMAO!!!!!!!! Come on! Another feeble attempt to try and gather support from the masses. But people are too smart to let her crys of doom and gloom for our economy get to them. And the smoke screen about how bad it looks for business investors in Hawaii? LOL If they "really" want to be here they will, but not by taking short cuts or with "favors" from politicians. Admit it, you're more concerned about the "INVESTORS", the ones who contributed to your campaign. Sorry governor you put yourself in this mess and its actually quite funny to see her run around like a chicken without a head to save herself and her Superferry.

Use of state/county lands/funds is cause for EA. This law was enacted in 1974 (after Young Brothers, Matson, etc., had existing leases with the State). Lingle wanted to honehone the okole of the powerbrokers in DC so she instructed her idiot chief of staff to instruct the idiot DOT director and the moron OEQC director to "exempt" the Superferry from EA requirements. PROBLEM - Cumulative impacts and secondary impacts invalidate an exemption. I guess if you are a power lesbo, you are above the law and can do whatever the hell you like.
