To Ms. Grey, whose dog died due to the fireworks: I am VERY sorry to hear about your loss and am afraid that your case is not that unusual. A friend of mine had her dog inside the house, but she panicked, jumped through a CLOSED window, and got out. Thankfully my friend caught her before she was hit by a car. I had 4 of my dogs tranquilized and inside a windowless bathroom, but one of them still had seizures because the bombs were so loud. The same thing happened to someone else I know. The illegal fireworks get smuggled in mixed in with the legals, so the only thing that will work is a ban on ALL fireworks except public displays. The legal fireworks are also being made into home made bombs. This is a FEDERAL offense, not a violation of some state law. I really don't care how things were 10 or 20 or 30 years ago. Hawaii has an ever-increasing population, increasingly dangerous fireworks users, and things have got to change. As for no one calling the police--BS! They got thousands of complaints, as reported on the news. I called them myself, and they went and had a chat with the morons blowing off bombs across the street. As soon as they left the idiots went right back to blowing them up. Enforcing existing laws will not work. And for all those who say "a ban won't work, people will still blow off fireworks", imagine applying that same "logic" to all sorts of other crimes, like murder, child rape, meth production, etc. Sure, there will always be people who do it, but the point is that when you make meaningful laws with severe punishments it makes it easier to catch the bad guys, and it deters many more from doing the crime in the first place. Otherwise it would be total anarchy. For those who feel the need to poison the air and endanger everyone around them, GROW UP and stop being so selfish.

"Everyone should have health care" - Mary Matayoshi. Illegal aliens too?. What about those people who do not want to find a job? Especially if they have a family. Now, how many people do you think that would be in the United States. So remember, these two categories of people do not contribute to the miracle health coverage that you are hoping for. Be careful for what you wish for.

Why ban only fireworks when over 400,000 people die each year just in the United States from tobacco products. Get your priorities in order and ban all smoking in public spaces.
