Mary, since Hawaii was granted an exemption to the healthcare bill, people without healthcare who are working less than the 19 hours required by the State to qualify for healthcare, will still be without healthcare.
I also understand that Medicare benefits will be cut also, so you will be paying more for your health care.
Seniors, you need to contact your Senators and Representative's offices to find out the real scoop.

"The city and state are sponsors of terrorism because they continue to collect money for something that has proven to be a major health and safety threat to its citizens."

It's not the LEGAL fireworks that killed your dog, it's the ILLEGALS--and no taxes or fees are collected on them. Look to your neighbors for terrorism, not the government.

Maybe we can require that the manufacturers of the fireworks use smokeless powder in the fireworks.

Mr. Fox, Believe it! In the neighborhoods of Waipahu/WaipioGentry/Pearl City, and I'm sure other areas as well, the illegal fireworks started in October and went on every night and were still going off last night. The intensity grew each night until the final ear-splitting, lung clogging crescendo on New Year's Eve.
Maybe the folks in your part of the island have a little more consideration for their neighbors. Ours sure don't.

In my part of Pearl City, they go off all year long. I think they stockpile New Year's ones for Jan-June and then stockpile 4th of July ones for July-Nov. I know, cuz I got some left-overs in my garage. Ban 'em all and see what happens - - NOTHING. Leave fireworks alone and enforce the existing laws.

The Starbulletin on 1/8/10, printed Thomas Friedman's column, "Muslim Leaders must use shame against terrorists", in regards to the Christmas Day Northwest affair. My research shows numerous sources for truth. Israel owned International Consultants on Targeted Security(ICTS) was in charge of the Amsterdam security. Also, ICTS is in charge of 3 airports used by "Muslim participants" on 9/11; Londons Bus system during their 7-7 "Muslim Bombing"; Charles de Gaulle Airports, Paris, where "shoe bomber" Richard Reid boarded a plane on 12/22,2001. ICTS allowed the security breach to take place. A recent article, "Mossad Tied to "Underwear Bomber" by Victor Thorn should be read. America's media, citizens,Governors, Congress and President, and police/security agencies should immediately access for any connections to Israeli ICTS at our airports. Investigate and arrest to eliminate for the security of American citizens. Your readers will find former CIA Bin Laden unit head, Michael Schener slam of the Israel Lobby on C-Span most informative.

MSNBC viewers have Keith, SB readers have Pat.
Both are hateful and biased in their opinion.
Both Johnny one-notes.
If you believe what they say, Israel is the force behind all the muslim murdering going on in the world.

Mr. Forrest, you wrote:
"I would like to know if state Rep. K. Mark Takai ever handled fireworks when he was young, and did he enjoy himself in the process, and did he look forward to the next New Year's Eve? If he did, why is he trying to take away the same enjoyment he had when he was young?"

Well, when I was younger, I used to enjoy going into bars and restaurants and smoking my cigarettes as I drank with my friends. I can no longer do that now because we have learned that second hand smoke is unhealthy even to those who choose not to smoke. We have changed our laws because we are now more informed and evolved. Get it? It is not because we are "trying to take away the same enjoyment" from others.

Dear Mary Matayoshi,

Apparently all Citizens are entitled to a sweetheart deal with Countywide Mortgage.

My good friend Senator Dodd (D) was testing out this concept to make sure it was safe for the American People.

I believe that not only do people deserve free Health Care, they deserve a free House.

Some say it was this kind of short sighted thinking has led the Country to financial ruin.

Frankly, I don't understand what they are talking about.

I feel so sorry for the woman who lost her dog as a result of the fireworks. My cats were traumatized as well. Where I grew up, fireworks were illegal. If you wanted to see fireworks, you had to watch the official city sanctioned ones. I understand that there are religious and cultural traditions associated with fireworks, especially among Asian cultures. But sorry, no loss of life or injury is worth such traditions. I fully support the banning of such fireworks. Call me culturally insensitive but life and physical safety is a higher value in my opinion

It's interesting that there is never any mention of Israeli murders in our media.Over 1400 Palestinians murdered in GAZA in a 3 week period this time last year by Israel. WHat about the over million Iraqi's murdered by American troops, Pakistanis by American drones, or Afghani murders?I would just like to see equal and truthful reporting in American media.

While I am sorry for her loss, I agree that the fireworks didn't kill Maura Grey's dog. In fact, as a pet owner, she was responsible for her pet's safety. If her dog "broke free," she didn't exercise enough caution in caring for her beloved animal's life.

Again, I see the event as a tradgedy, and my sympathies go out to her, but it wasn't the fireworks that were responsible.

I agree with Steve. Our cats are indoors and we make sure they stay that way during the "festivities." It is a tragedy for the pet owner and the individual who hit the dog. A dog ran in front of us on an Ohio freeway many years ago. There was nothing we could do but I still remember it vividly. Pet owners please, please, please secure your animals!

Someday smokeless, flameless and safe fireworks will replace the gun-powdered variety. If you want louder pops, just turn up the volume on your headset.
