Attention Guy! When you ridicule NASA scientists, you are pretty much ridiculing science in general. The same science that invented the ink for your pen, the computer you wrote this letter on, and an endless supply of other things. What you see as silly and wasteful research actually is part of a much larger thread of research designed to improve the lives of everyone in this country. So before you start casting stones at Science, think a moment about what you would not have were it not for Science. And believe me....those guys have real jobs just like everyone else. And probably just as thankless, credit going to folks like yourself with myopic opinions.

I'm with you. Out of the race to the moon, we received many benefits, including new medical technology that led to better surgical procedures for heart disease, materials we use everyday in our (I think the space race was responsible for polyester fabrics, teflon, and the like), computer technology, Tang, freeze dried food used by campers, and even better pens, to name just a few of the many, many, many benefits that NASA gave us. I'm not a science teacher, so I don't know all of the benefits, but I'm sure there are more.

People who oppose scientific research are often the first to clamor for cures for cancer, autism, ALS, MS, Alzheimer's, and so on, when their own families are affected by these tragedies, yet they cannot see the cause-effect relationship between denying pure research and the lack of treatments for serious diseases.
