Can we say mentally delusional? This sort of mental illness is far from being uncommon- it's just that John Barnes managed to get this to the attention of the media. He did this because he wanted to be special & he wanted the attention. He did this so he could feel better about himself. Barnes knows that he's the father of Richard Barnes but doesn't want to admit it because that would entail him having to admit that John Barnes is the reason that John Barnes was an outcast. He alienated himself from everyone else. The only thing I fault his dad for is for not recognising the signs of mental illness earlier & getting it treated then.

"One good thing that came out of this is that I wanted to get the word out that I don't think I'm related to Richard Barnes, and I think I did a pretty good job of that," John Barnes said.
Sounds that he had this planned to get back at his own estranged family, by using the kidnapped missing boy's family as a scapegoat and going to the news media. Worse, he was on the talk show even before the DNA proved he was not related to the missing boy family. There were news pictures of him in his home wearing an open bathrobe showing his 'hairy' chest... why would he greeted the news reporter like that and then allowed himself to photograph for the news looking like that! This man not right in the mind. It was all about himself, and yet in his fifites, still very immature and damn selfish, playing hoax. He purposely did this to hurt his family while his poor elderly dad is still living. He had dragged two elderly fathers and families into his maddness thoughts.

Agreed! His sister works at a local place here and said his family believes that is exactly what happened and is super ticked!
