I currently live in Colorado Springs (about 360,000 people). For the most part I like where I live, but I can do without the police helicopters. And of late summers here have been increasingly hotter. Winters are nice, although we do get an occasional blizzard.
I have been thinking of Kalispell as a second home (some day). I may want someplace quieter, yet still scenic. I don't think weather would be a problem.
I would like to know:
a) What do you like about where you live?
b) What do you not like?
c) If you were going to live anywhere else where would it be?

A) I like the atmosphere of havijng a city with a wal-mart and all needed grocery stores but only being just a hop away from glacier park and all that it has to offer.
B)my only complaint is sand on the roads in winter...but anyplace with snow has that
C) Sorry no place but here for me...

My husband and I love it up in Glacier and Kalispell would be a perfect place to live...just wish real estate wasn't so expensive..compared to SD.

If I decide to move there -*and can*- I will. Fortunately for you I don't have the money right now. And I don't know if I would want to move there anyway. I've lived in Colorado for at least 19 years. There are few other places that can compare to it except for perhaps Alaska, and Montana.

Used to be a much nicer smaller town here. People worked hard, had fun and took care of each other. Now with all the out of state "2nd home" people that have moved in in the last ten years this place is starting to look and act like a town I don't know. Too many out of staters bringing in their money and raising property taxes, building homes destroying the view of the mountains we have all enjoyed for years and years.
Stay in Colorado, we really dont want your money here.

ps, age 26, married 3 kids Heck with sand, it is more like chunks of rocks on the roads, my windshield is good proof of this.. Also the de-icer sprayed within city areas is really nasty stuff, very corrosive on vehicle exteriors. So it might be better to only live here in the summer time months, like it seems some rich people can afford to do.

Must also mention this valley is a pretty gloomy place, the sun doesn't shine often on this valley floor. If you live in higher elevations it is not as much of a problem, but then you do have to tend with deeper snow issues. Again if you like this kind of weather then...
Also this valley has grown so much, there is not a small town feel what-so-ever here anymore. I've lived in N.W. Mt. for 20 yrs. Not by choice, eventually when my children are old enough I am going to move anywhere, rather than stay in the Kalispell area. Montana does have some really nice places... But depending on what a person needs as for as employment, this can effect a person's decision.
I've survived by the timber industry, and this has become a poor choice for employment anymore around here, unfortunately.
Just thought I would give you a little more info. Just my own thoughts. Best of Luck to You !

Actually though alot of construction companys and other related businesses do make money, (of which quite a few of these people are native Montanans) Jobs are created when rich people move in, which is good for some. Unfortunately I fall into the poor worker category. So it is a give and take. But I hate seeing this area getting over populated as well. But the property tax issue is an honest one, for common working people. I know alot of people have moved because of this.

Sorry Mr_Ed,
Kind of leaving the subject you were looking for but personally I would rather see a giant clearcut on many mountains here, rather than all of the fancy houses and such being built. Hopefully you are not an environmentalist, since there are a few working lumber mills around here still. You might not like that. I have been in Colorado a few times. I never saw a whole lot of logging around there. Some towns reminded me of Whitefish. Ski resort areas. Ritzy feeling. Yuck !

Hey if you do move can I watch your house for you down there in Colorado Springs ? Just Kidding. Wow, that is a very highly populated area. Think about Northern California, or the rugged Oregon coast. These would be some of my choices. The timber/forests there are awesome, and of course you have the vast ocean and huge trees if you pick the coastal areas. You might even glimpse a saquatch by moving out that way. Oregon, like Montana does not have a sales tax. Plus there are beautiful volanic mtns. too, all along the Cascade range. You'll still find your 4 seasons living in some of these areas.

Some of the people here are strange. Look at the posts for this little boy's loss of life. Alot(not all) of the people here think it is o.k to let a toddler raise themselves alone. I see it here in my neighborhood constantly. I care for my dog better than some people here take care of their kids. PLEASE, there are many nicer places than here. Keep up the search.. Alot of other places in Montana are nicer and very remote and mountainous. Where there really are people with friendly nice attitudes, and wouldn't treat you bad as long as you do the same to them. Not all people from big cities are bad people. I know. I was raised in small city of 3,000. It was way nicer than here. Even on a sunny day, it is gloomy here in spirit.

I have lived here 18 years. True, I'm not true native, but I've lived here long enough to know the tremendous growth that is going on. Also, true, the summer vacationers have increased the property taxes, especially in WhiteFish. But it is wrong not to encourage someone to move here because you want to keep the place to yourself. More people means better economy, more work, more money.

People come, people go, atleast Mr_Ed was polite enough to ask about moving here, while most people just do it and you can't stop it. I've watched towns all over grow. Alot of them all over the Pacific Northwest look so different from 24 years ago. So unless you want to live under a rock, you have to just accept it. When I was young I felt anger about change, exactly like some of the other posts written here, but it happens just about everywhere.
