The cabin in Quadeville was built by my great grandfather August Kauffeldt (and others) and seems to be Quadeville's claim to fame. My grandmother has pictures of some of my relatives with Hatch's children at school. There was a big writeup in the Toronto Star about it several years ago. You could see if you can find it in the archives if you are interested. |

The Sleepy Hollow Resort, which used to be part of the original estate, even mentions the Al Capone connection on its website:
http://shresort.tripod.com/id12.html I understand this got them in a bit of hot water with the owners of the house in question, since they prefer to remain low-key and discourage uninvited visitors, but the condo association stubbornly refuses to remove this information from their website. The owner and caretakers of the Sleepy Hollow house that oldtimers in South Haven swear was one of Capone's Southwest Michigan homes (many provided services to the estate and personally saw him there) are very tight-lipped about the connection and won't confirm or deny it to curiosity-seekers. The house is set pretty far back, by the way, and is partially visible from the public road only in winter. I wouldn't advise entering the property via the private road since caretakers live there full-time and will chase you out. Besides, it isn't polite to trespass anyway.:-) I would love to hear more anecdotes and details about Big Al's time in South Haven! |

I lived in a town in Pullman, MI, in Allegan county in the mid 196o's and I visited a house that was said to have been Al Capone's house that he came to on different occasions. If anyone knows about this I would like information about where it is located there.

I heard Al Capone used to love printing and he left a message that said you should all love printing too.
Im the Frank guy you heard about, but see, I used to tell Al = "hey, go get some printed materials eh!" .. but he thought I was being cryptic and that I meant alreayd printed materials like money.. he kept calling and asking = "whatta ya want Frank? I can get you anything you need!" .. and i kept tellin him = "get me some printed materials already!" and he would say = "Im tryin.. Im gonna get that for you Frank, just be patient!" anyhow.. he never got me any printed materials but now these days, you can all get your own printed materials on that thing called the Internet. especially since its free shipping to Michigan. http://www.ezprintsolutions.com |

What ever happened to Richard Lampinen?
After the 2004 article Escanaba Chamber of commerce took the info off their website. Escanaba claims to be a quite town - well not in my youth. Anyone know valid source adept at identifying some of Al's colleagues? Post the source. Thanks! |

I understand that the Purple Gang were on Stony Lake. Do you think Capone was around there too? |

I live right by the house on Dewey Lake in Sister Lakes. It does have ties to Capone and as a cool double basement for a quick exit.

The house on Dewey is elegant and old, in great shape. The family that owns the
'cubby bear' in Chicago own it now. Its used quite a bit and is beautifully kept up. its neat to see off of the shore and I could see how easy it would be to make a quick exit. |

I live in Sister Lakes and the Bronte WInery wa where we took people that were visiting us from out of town. They did claim to have a Capone connection. I live on Dewey Lake in Sister Lakes and we have a home on the lake that was said to have been built by a "capone bobyguard" It has a cool doublebasement and a few ways out of the place that comeout of the hillside and lead to the lake and or the road to get out. It was built in the right time period and they used local rock for the project-its a fortress and would be tough to get into or out of unless you knew where to go. THis house is built into the hill that comes up to the back of Dewey Lake-its great to check it out from a boat. This area was a hotspot in the early part of the century-Sandy Beach atttracted people from all over and it was easily accessed by train, car, or boat. We have pictured of hundreds of cars of people that stayed around here, all coming to the beaches and lakes to relax.
But anyway-the house is interesting and was built for a specific purpose-we don't even have a police department here.

Any chance of seeing those? cornpirate@comcast.net I'm from the LaPorte County area and have stayed in Michigan City and LaPorte. The house you reffered to shaped as a gun is in Long Beach Michigan City, Indiana. If you know how to get there drive down Lake Shore Drive to "Stop 30 or 31" make a right and it'll be up the hill. It's unmistakenly shaped as a gun. It's rumored to have underground tunels to Lake Michigan. He traveled by boat to Chicago and other cities around the great lake to avoid authorities and enemies. |
