Why are you folks in Michigan so RUDE...

Seriously because tourists are so hyper and crazy. They drive up to be this way. We are really laid back and relaxed. People, especially those from Chicago want everything NOW and THEIR way. It is the way you treat them and that is the response to get back.

LOL...what, are you a television reporter? Seems that one honestly can not group everyone as the same. Example: "Everybody LOVES football"....how stupid is that remark....has that reporter interviewed EVERYone? I hardly think so! Ergo, saying that everyone "...was smart allics and rude" is categorizing everybody in one group. Maybe you should have reconsidered your wording first. Smile and remember, not EVERYbody is a rude driver, no matter where you go.

I remember going to a gas station in Yipsi area near Ann Arbor. I was checking and filling the air using the free air compressor in a gas station. A white dude pulled up in a Toyota truck. I told him I was almost done. After I was done, my wife told me that he mustered the words "fucking chink" out of his mouth while I was pumping the air. I'm sorry? Did I offend you in any way?

Do I even need to mention that they drive slow in their massive trucks in the inner lane?

Michigan is not the South for sure. However, I have lived here all my life and to lump everyone in Michigan together is very wrong to do. The East side drivers and personalities are very different from the West side of the state. The pace picks up once you get east of Jackson. I am a jerk driver, I will admit. I am always in a hurry on the road, even when I'm really not in a hurry. I've encountered this same driving in Ohio, Indiana and Illinois though. On behalf of any one that was rude to you in Michigan though I'd like to apologize though.

I have been working in Holland, Michigan now for the last year and have found the people there to be rude, cheep, and just down right mean. I am a very positive person, raised very well to hold the door say excuse me and thank you, and to treat people with love and kindness. But working here is killing me! Every day is a challenge just to make it to the end of my work day.

Most can't spell and have the reading comprehension of a 5 year old. There is a definite rudeness to the people of Michigan that reproduces itself throughout the state. Folks here are just in it for themselves and will only do things that result in them getting something for free or to get easy money. That is it. They will frown at you if you smile at them. They will call you faggot and asshole to try and get you to fight without provocation, they will steal anything not nailed down, they will cut you off in traffic and/or tailgate with middle lane swerving to make sure you know that 10 over the speed limit isn't cutting it. They will completely miss appointments and treat it like it is your problem. Otherwise if they do show up, they will be on "Michigan time" which is 15-30 minutes after the scheduled time. They will illegally park in the roads and parking lots (stop clogging up the roadway-there is a parking space 5 feet away). They will not abide by common decency when handling doorways or basic human assistance (an old lady with a walker) and often when waving them thru intersections, they will shake their heads or shoot you a bird for no good reason other than you were being nice. People go for fun runs and bike rides at rush hour and the whole dumb state gets off work at 3pm. The other end are the academics/students you will meet that are just as dumb and clueless. The folks around here like to basically buy $200 worth of wine with two bags of frozen peas and call it "grocery shopping". They will leave their cart in the aisle while they walk around sipping their coffee and literally watch other people shop, only taking breaks to mouth-breathe and read the label on a bag of chips. They will park in the fire lane without thinking twice to shop for 30 mins in a store and pile 30 items in a 15 item lane (10 if it being cases of wine). They will belligerently jaywalk with their headphones on without looking once. You will be at a 4-way stop downtown for 40 mins, waiting for the rude little turds to slowly walk across and text, never once looking up. They will also laugh at you if they see you are stuck there and just keep trickling across. Their "I heart plastic boobs" dbol cycling douchebros will probably drunkenly puke on the hood of your car and try to kick your mirror off downtown while milking the prostate of their frat brothers in the parking deck. The cheese on the pizzas here is silicone- you have to buy pizzas from chain stores as the other cheese will remain in your dishwasher for three wash cycles. Everyone has health problems from the overly calcified water which means you will have a 3 month wait for any hospital appointments you will need. You will also witness some of the most primitive medical facilities (think civil war triage) with some of the most unprofessional, yet overly zealous staff you will ever meet. They will shout your personal info every chance they get and will even berate you for congenital medical maladies. They are clown shoes and will also not read your chart (a baker's dozen in my case) and prescribe meds you are allergic to. Everything takes 500 times longer here because of the people. I think they are probably baffled when they travel around the country. Like others have noted, it is a waste of a nice, naturally beautiful state. You can also tell from some of the responses on here that they are indeed pig-headed and have issues with rudimentary spelling (even with spell check helping-shows you their attention to detail and how they would rather yell what they are thinking lol). And that is just "white" Michigan. You don't even want to hear about the other half of the population. It has its own issues that will never be appeased. If you are dumb enough to try and help you will be hurt at the very least. You can gather your belongings from the pawn shop later.

Agreed, I have lived in Grand Rapids ,MI for over 2 years. they are extremely jealous, confrontational and they dress like something from "Mad Max." They have no respect for themselves nor anyone else. Also, whatever you do as a lady, do not dress up especially if you are thin. The ladies will try to attract your husband because they hate you for being in shape. Additionally, My husband works as a manager at a diesel company. His peers are tainting his mind. He was sent to a porno shop to look for a gun magazine that had not been sold there in years. Why? I am waiting until their brainwashing is done to see what occurs in our marriage. At this point I am ready to move back to Cincy. They are rude there but if you call them out at least they will try to finish what they started. Michiganders start shit but represent jellyfish when you give them a taste of there own medicine. Sorry know it alls but I have ran into you's more than 85 percent of my time.

The state is largely fraught with dangerous drivers, recklessly speding as if their time is clearly more valuable than anyone else's life. he constant terror of just haing to live here makes it a lot harder to actually do anything else.

Seriously, they are extremely rude here, especially the drivers. Read the responses from the local people. Rude responses denying that they are rude. Too funny.

It seems you all are feeding off one another. Schoolcraft is a quite happy place not to mention the school kids and teachers were known to have the most accomadating personalities to outside kids and substitutes. Go to the Fourth of July parade. Our restraunts, maybe approach the people a different way because if you talked to me the way you talk in the comments I probably wouldn't feel very nice either. Aside from that I hope you run into nicer people on the off chance you did meet some duds.

Well folks, I'm in Holland on a weekend trip and I would like to say that I have experienced nothing but great people in Southwest Michigan. I am from Southeast Michigan where encountering pleasant people is rare. I've been all over the United States including large metropolitan areas and I consider Detroit area to be one of the most rude areas I've ever been to.
I have lived in Georgia, Florida, Colorado where most people were courteous and friendly. The exceptions were the Miami area, St. Petersburg where the attitudes were similar to Detroit.
If you want to judge Michigan as a whole travel outside the Detroit/Ann Arbor areas and experience west Michigan, the thumb area and the upper pen. There is a big difference
