Those people lost their jobs because Zippy's is too expensive and Maui people no like pay high prices when they can get better stuff at better prices somewhere else.

Yes I agree Zippys is pricing itself out of the market.

The only thing I really get there every few months (maybe 5 -6 times /yr is a dozen donuts)

It's more of a last resort than anything.

But the food/quality of food/prices of food is the heart of the matter.

Maybe that is the reason why Zippys has to resort to layoffs.

Their FOOD is too expensive.

Their FOOD is seen by some as not being up to par for the price.

Their FOOD is seen by some as being too small when it comes to serving size.

Their FOOD could be the reason why less people eat there.

Their FOOD is affecting their profits.

Their FOOD could be the reason why people are being laid off.

I'll agree with the people here on Zippy's menu, taste, and kinda pricy. However, this article is on lay offs. Not their food. Seems like everday we hear of a business closing or laying off a big amount of people. Zippy's, Starbucks, etc. are not small potatoes, they are big franchises. I'm currently unemploy cuz our company got hit as well. I fear it's gonna get worst, especially in Hawaii. So, let's not criticize the food and have some sympathy for those who lost their jobs.

No problem. Zippy's has the most bland food in all of Hawaii.
I gave that honor to L&L, myself.

Seriously. Why do so many people like Zippys, L&L, and for that matter, McDonald's and Budweiser?

Or, to put the matter where it really belongs, the management.
New management decided to jack the prices and replace the menu items that made them famous with pale imitations. Probably looked great at the time-huge per unit margins, and cheaper material costs, while cashing in on the reputation so slowly and painfully built by the business founders. Of course, now we're all here saying 'your prices are too high and your quality too low, you'll get no margin at all if nobody buys what you're selling, and we're not buying what you sold twenty years ago, we're buying what you sell today.', so two steps down the line it's not so good any more.
Oh and note to Mauians...the Honolulu branches are still hiring. Any questions?

I used to eat at Zippy's twice a week for breakfast and 1-2 times for lunch. They priced me out. The workers are awesome but the food is mediocre and very expensive now. Sad.

Zippy's is zippy's. Food's okay, just typical grinds, nothing fancy, had the spaghetti special last night, usually not too ono, but was done right and good eats. Hey Maui, whatdamatta? Missing the Superferry yet? Howz business?

Just like Liberty House, Zippy's shafted the local market, local people don't get vocal, they just stop patronizing.
Our family used to go to Zippy's at least once a week. When they raised prices & cut servings we have not been back with the exception of benefit chili or football coupons. Been about 5 years now and don't miss it at all. Too many other places with good food and better value, we vote with our wallet.
My prediction is that layoffs are coming to Oahu sooner than later.

Of course if you get the these hard to find "prok" chops it would be expensive, but for $23 you do get a heaping full plate of about 5 pork chops that are ono!

I agree with the comments about Zippy's high prices. Zippy's has priced itself out of the market. Our family used to get take-out from Zippy's around once a week, but as Zippy's prices rose steadily, the frequency of our visits dropped to once every two weeks, then once a month, then once every couple of months. This year we have only been there twice, and only because we had a coupon each time to soften the blow. Had it not been for the coupons, we wouldn't have gone. I like its food, but Zippy's has lost its way on pricing, big time.

Kahuku burger mill back in the sixties had long line because the food was cheap, the quality was outstanding, the customer relation was da best and had juke box and pinball machine. Compare that economic times to now and the warm feeling you get at Zippies don't even come close. It's not the same anymore. What i'm getting at is the old days and the small mom and pops drive inns was the best. Zippies is only good for their desserts. Take note upper management of zippies, show more aloha and serve bigger portions even if the price have to go up. Try some all you can eat meals too like Elena's resturaunt for 9.99

Not if the packed restaurant I was in the other day is any indication, btw, food quality seems to have gone up noticably.
