Why should the Superferry be singled out for
inspection of invasive species and all other
modes of transport are not?
So the Superferry is clean when entering island
harbors but a Coqui frog attaches to one of the
barges or other ships. No make sense!!

Senator Hooser seems like a decent legislator. Siding for sustainability he seems to have a vision for our State's future. He makes the point that he was in favor of the Superferry in 2004. But, he changed his mind in 2005 when HSF asked for $40M in funds be made to improve the harbors, and when the ferry company did everything NOT to have to do an EA or EIS.

That he came to believe that skimming over the environmental assessment was unlawful back in 2005, and that he was not able to sway others in the Legislature to see this, really concerns me. By letting the harbors get improved without the EA, and letting the exemption happen, every Legislator bears some responsibility for the situation we are in today. Maybe it's a matter of law that he did not know what to do since he didn't go to law school, but he should be doing all he can as Senate Majority Leader to be heard above the crowd.

I am glad to see that he wants protesters to respect the law and stay out of the water.

But will they listen to him either? It still seems that the honorable Senator from Kauai isn't listening to the majority of his constituents. It has been said that "Your actions are speaking so loud that I cannot hear a word of what you are saying." Here's hoping his vision in the coming days is more in line with the majority of his constituents that want the Superferry to begin operations now.

In the past articles regarding the superferry and the controversy it has borught with it, I could honestly say that most articles were severely biased in one way or another. This article, however, I believe is well rounded and makes valid points to bnoth ends without drawing an unneccessary conclusion. Stating what is known to be true and what is true and perspectives on both sides without pointing (drastically anyway) fingers towards one person or another. Sen. Hooser, I know for a fact, is a good person and he does want what is best for the land he lives on, his constituents, and the state as a whole. His role cannot be an easy one in the state that the legislature is currently in. But I applaud him for getting through it all (so far) with dignity! Kudos all around!

I hope everyone takes heed to what HSF is going thru. everything HSF must do to move cars and trucks from island to island, must also be done at YB, MATSON,and Pasha..evasive species, drugs, etc... other shipping companys must also pressure wash all under cars that is being shipped to our islands and inbetwen..shipping companys can now start to charge more for the extras to ship to and from hawaii.. remember senate, what is good for HSF, must also apply to the other shipping companys.. If I was HSF I would just take my ferry back to the mainland, because sounds like you are not welcomed by some enviromentalist here,, But no worry, the 40 million, us guys the hawaii tax payers will take care of that...

I finally figured out what the biggest pollution is that Superferry is creating

VISUAL POLLUTION --- that big ship sitting in Honolulu Harbor with its gigantic billboard sign on it is getting ugly

time for the politicians to work things out and give our harbor some relief

Hooser deserves to move in with Mr Cardoza from Maui. The two deserve each other. Not opaying attention to what the majority wants seems to tell me that he has something else on his plate...maybe a little kiss-okole. Take it from a Radford guy, Class of 60, who will not apologize for what I jsut said!!!!

Sen Hooser it is amazing that you can fall for all the anti ferry talk. I ask you and all the protesters How many of you make a living on the ocean? The whales dont come up to ships that make noise and the ferry will do that. And do you know that there is a shipping lane in the channel with ships passing all the time going to the orient. For sure I will not be voting for you in the next election

I trust our Legislators to do what they feel is right. THEY have traveled all the islands and lisstened to hours of restimony---some very good---and some very threatening. They are advised by those departments that are much closer to the subject with expertise in the work that they do such as Agriculture--not just the DOT! Their twice appearance with their info the last two days, was really enlightening in that they point our that our state must be more alert to the many other ways that "invasive species" are entering our state "without laws to cover other transportation methods that are even more unsafe". Our sense of "reason" must enter the picture and open minds on what "we really need to do" to make our state as safe as possible! The FERRY with Agriculture oversight will help them in help ways to enact further laws and rules of protection that may be more dangerous than any a ferry would bring---if any!

I am very disappointed with the recent actions of Senator Hooser. I have been a supporter of Mr Hooser from the days when he was the "outsider" on the Kauai county council. I felt it was good to hear a fresh view on pressing issues.
When the superferry issue raised its head in local media and Kauai residents were seen as radicals and anti Hawaii in the their "stay away from our island" protests, Mr. Hooser was not there to help keep them in place. By keeping quiet and not demanding that protestesters keep things civil and legal, I lost all respect of the man. He never denounced those actions, the actions that have put a black eye on Kauai's reputation of being a friendly and welcoming island. His views against the ferry continue to be contrary to my views towards the superferry and the future for our island. He has lost my vote in future elections.

We should not sweat about HSF evasive, species, drugs and little things, we must pay attention to 500K container comming in yearly in our piers from all over the world with no inspection at all by our local dept of argiculture. Why? due to Fed.Gov t.instruction.

Let's look at a bigger picture for our Ohana..

Senate Majority Leader Gary Hooser is the one politician who brings an honest and respectful response to Governor Ligles abuse of power. It takes guts to stand up for what is legally and morally correct over what is politically expedient. His is real leadership.

I agree!!! A politicians job isn't an easy one. They have to sometimes take a stand on things that aren't popular. I used to support the Superferry but after looking back at the reasons why I wanted it to run, I realized that it was for selfish reasons. That the "me" factor was taking the lead and that I may be missing a bigger picture. I think if you look at it objectively, there is no way Hooser could be kissing ass as some may think. How could that be when he isn't taking a stand on what is popular. To be able to weigh the facts before taking a stand shows flexibility and open-mindedness not inconsistency. He is risking his career by taking a less popular route and that takes a great amount of integrity and wisdom.

Senator Hooser is a hero for holding this masively funded behemouth of a project accountable to a very clear environmental law that has protected all the state, not just the convenience of O'ahu consumers for the last 30 years.

When 300 plus people give a standing ovation at the senatorial panel's info meeting one week ago, for Senator Hooser, you see the heart of Kaua'i, the Spirit of Kaua'i supports this man's courage.

Aloha Senator Hooser,

However this whole Superferry mess turns out, I just want to thank you for restoring my confidence in our local politics and for showing me that there really are people of integrity in our governent. I stopped voting years ago because I truely felt that my vote didn't count. That
politicians were never looking after the wishes and the welfare of their constituents. I've been waiting for YEARS for someone with enough common
sense and convictions to stand up for what is right given all the facts available. Someone with enough integrity to risk his own career for what
he knows and believes is for the betterment of our island home and its people. You have the open mindedness and flexibility to weigh the facts
before taking a stand on an issue.

Because of your selfless actions, I now feel that the time is right to register once again as a voter. Many of those with whom I've spoken with
who are registered but didn't turn out to vote feel the same as I do. It is because of you and recent events that has restored our faith again in
the political process.

As I gave my testimony at the hearing on Kauai, I said that as a Kanaka Maoli, our ancestors lived their lives with future generations in mind. I
also said that our Ali'i who had the responsibility of managing the land,
resources and people were no longer here and that you (the panelists) were the current governments new Ali'i and bear the responsibility of caring for the land, resources and people. You Senator Hooser are a good Ali'i. It may not mean anything, but, I will do whatever it takes to support you as long as you
hold to your current course.

I do not envy you and your position as a lawmaker. It is a job that I would not want, for you sometimes have to make decisions or take a
position that may not be popular. However, your current stand during this whole affair have proven to many that you are not in politics to prepare yourself for a popularity contest. I'm not writing to boost your ego, I'm just saying that you have an admiral sense of wisdom that is so lacking in many of our elected officials. It is a trait that is so hard to find.

Mahalo Nui Loa,

(deleted)

P.S. I understand that we will never always have the same opinions on everyy issue, but I will always respect a man with integrity, honesty and
humility.

I am thakful for Senator Hoosers ability to look
further into the mattre of the SF.

How many people knew that for everyday that the docks wre not readily availbale for use by the SF (upon the launch date) the State could be FINED $18,000 per day by the SF for not being up to par in dock improvements and availability for use?

ANd who is the State? It's you and I...come on people, open up your eyes to the fine print. Read
between the lines of the contratual words of our
Governor, DOT, our politicians....Yo have the right to know that it went farther beyond just was reported on TV, newpapers, and the radio.

Before we jump into a another fire, may all that has never been disclosed on this SF issue NOW present itself to the people of Hawaii before we make another fatal mistake....by challenging our own laws.
