Abandon ships - Hawaii Business

The Hawaii Superferry, anchored in bankruptcy in a Wilmington, Del., courtroom, is seeking to literally abandon ship about three months after legal and environmental obstacles forced it to cease operations in the islands. Full Story

Thanks BingBing.

I have spent a lot of time studying the Superferry and their motives. People on these forums say whatever they want a lot of the time..which is OK - its a forum. But I stand by my predictions.

I predicted the HSF would be out of business back in early 2008 (it's all on various threads to read). As you say, with fuel prices, their 30% capacity, and their overly-large boat, their business plan simply made NO sense...so there HAD to be another reason this went forward. Simple as that.

It's hard to guess whether it was to help support Austal while they expanded for the JHSV..or whether it was some type of testbed for the JSHV technology..or whether it was just a cheap way to get these boats built THEN..without having to have Congressional approval,(just trick the Hawaii legislators..much easier), or as I think, it was some mix of all of these things. Basically just a good way to keep Lehman's vision of the "Future Navy" afloat, while allowing Austal to double the size of it Alabama shipyard and learn how to weld aluminum boats of this size (and yeah, some of you please go CHECK my facts..by all means.)

To whateva - so what you think is gonna happen now? Who will buy these boats? Who has this kind of money except the US Government or large investor-backed group who plan to lease them?

You think I'm wrong, but I don't see you providing any answers.

And I don't claim to have all the answers - I'm just trying to provide the side of the story that is being kept hidden.

Some believe me, some don't - but at least my side gets heard. Dig for yourself and see what you come up with.

A sad day for anyone who enjoys visiting relatives on other islands and for the sports teams who cannot afford to fly with all of their equipment.

And now we have no cheap alternative to get to other islands, move cargo or our cars, visit relatives or go to doctor. Who wins? Rental car agencies, Young Bros and the ecoterrorists like Sierra Club. You think another company is going to come pay for an EIS and sink money into the state to provide the service? Oh no, ain't gonna happen. They saw the sheep in the water off Kauai. Why spend money on an endeavor that may be stalled by sheep on surfboards. This is why Kauai is the okole of the state. This thinking will fatten up the terrorists and hurt the individual who wants to visit auntie and not pay for a car rental. Idiots abound. 1880s attitudes will keep you in the hinterlands forever.
Yes! Please don't come here. You are so right (wink wink). Leave us to live life the way you will only ever dream of!! Enjoy your sad version of progress. We here on Kauai will take our paradise and protect it thank you very much :) I repeat, Don't come here.

The Super Ferry was a source of jobs. It appears to me that the airlines and car rental companies infact did contribute to the demise of the Super Ferry. It was taking away their profits. This was one boat with a second to follow. Both the approximate size of a barge. If one would follow in the thinking of those opposed to them then each new cruise ship scheduled to stop in Hawaii should have to get an EIR. Cruise ships cause alot more damage to the enviorement than the ferrys ever could.

The government also lost money on this deal. And remember the U.S. government and the State of Hawaii lost money and continues to loose money on the United States Lines / NCL America new ships (3 I believe)to replace the Independence and Constution ships. Whats left, one ship, the rest have left. And wasn't a new terminal built for them that they are not using.

When will the Hawaiian people learn?

We got kids on the leeward coast and other rural areas who have never been to downtown or Waikiki.

They have never seen outer islands. Many, probably most of the kids on the outer islands have never left their islands.

There are hundreds of thousands of Islanders who have never been off Oahu.

It's not just the cost of airfare but the cost of car rentals added on. The best travel deals they can get are not to see their own land but to be herded onto subsidized jets to be flown to Las Vegas to be robbed at the two favorite casinos of locals because they serve local style bento and plate lunches there while our pockets are picked.

How are we going to keep the keikis down on the plantations after they have seen Waikiki and been arrested for coming there by HPD.

If you want to suppress the local populations, just restrict their travel and you restrict their horizons.

The Super Ferry was a chance for locals to see their own State.

Bad idea right? Just ask the Hippies. They should all be Captain cooked!

The powers that be used them to do what they have always done: Suppress the local populations as they have forever This is just another example.

Why?

For the same reason dogs lick their da kines: Because they can.

One of those days; not in this economy. Hopefully they do things right, those hoops are there for a good reason. Short cutting things only short changes oneself.

Hype and glitz without homework; how very transparent.

Perhaps you should look up Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Formerly known as........
