Tsunami waves cross the Hawaiian Islands

HONOLULU At 1:50 PM Saturday, scientists at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center canceled the tsunami warning after all of Hawaii had braced for the worst for a tense 13 hours.

Saying "tsunami wave" is redundant. However, because the article states "tsunami waves", the word tsunami in this context acts as an adjective [to describe what kind of waves they were] and not as a noun. Hence "tsunami waves", as stated in the article, is not redundant.
