Is Stephany Sofos, the analyst, surprised with all of the store closings or just KB Toys, as juxtaposed in the story? KB's closing has nothing to do with sluggish sales at its Hawaiian locations ... the entire chain is closing down nationwide.

The local population is too small to support too many of these stores. Tourists pay an arm and a leg to come to Hawaii to experience Hawaiiana - not the same shops in their neighborhood mall at 1.5 times the price. Rent is very much higher in Hawaii. Result: going out of business after 2-3 years.

It's a simple explanation... oversaturation. People are getting more tight with their earnings due to the economy. People figured out they can cut out extravagant spending.

Talk about oversaturation , try going to the International market place in Waikiki nearly every stall sells the same over priced items ! With this recession I wonder how many of them are still in business ?

The MacNaughton group has brought nothing but rubbish to the islands and I for one hope all these chains this company and its owner have brought to Hawaii fail...When it all crashes down on him he will have the same fate as Hemmeter or Rewald...Its all about GREED and DEVELOPMENT!

Never ceases to amaze me when people would spend $3 on a Jamba Juice or Starbucks drink. Probably only costs 50 cents at most for the materials and cup. Businesses like that can only prosper when people have a lot of discretionary income or are not financially smart enough to buy food instead.
