It's a great idea that most major airports in the country have already been doing. The current rental lots are chaotic, too small, and are distasteful for seasoned travelers who are used to more modern facilities.

The political operatives just cannot come to grips with reality and the pending doom facing Hawaii. Given the economic climate in Hawaii and on the mainland one would think the legislators would do everything in their power to enhance the numbers of people visiting Hawaii.

Bottom line is the bureaucrats by nature have no concept of the free enterprise system thus are clueless regarding where the monies they capriciously spend come from.

are you kidding or what?
when a family decides to take a vacation they usually look up the costs of everything, hotel, air fare, RENTAL CARS, and the like and make a choice based on the total money needed to have a good time.

thats the way to make your island more attractive to vacationers, raise the rates & surcharges for everything.

sheesh, and you wonder why tourism has dropped.

DEAR CAR RENTAL COMPANIES,
What a really good idea. Remodel your facilities.Put in some potted plants and maybe a coke machine but you better do it on your nickle not mine.

Just another good reason to take the super Ferry and not have to rent a car...

"Supporters, which included most major car rental operators, said these improvements are long overdue to make Hawaii a more competitive destination, and helped push the bill into law in the last legislative session."

Someone please tell me how upgrading car rental facilities will make Hawaii a more competitive destination. It seems to me most people would just want to deal with a pleasant clerk, get the car, and be on their way and probably couldn't care less if they were being served from a grass shack.

Yes it's only $1.00 more per day...but when you add that to all the other surcharges on your rental agreement...renting a vehicle is becoming a "major" vacation expense. It won't be so bad for Oahu tourists since there is plenty of inexpensive public transit alternatives. But it will definately impact the outer islands.

This is a really dumb idea...gas prices are too high..airfares too high..hotels/hotel taxes too high! Timing is way off..visiter counts will be dropping anyway in the next few months, and this is just one more reason not to come to Hawaii ...!!

Why don't the car rental companies just pick up the tab themselves???? They DO make a profit, don't they? Why would they sock it to the customer in a downturned economy?

At airport... off airport. Who cares? That's why they have shuttle service. I couldn’t care less what the office looks like. I'm renting the car for a week or whatever and will not set foot back into the place until I return it. Geezzzz. Again, during a bad tourist season, you either stay status quo and wait, or you reduce rates to entice. You don't start raising. The Hotels have finally started to get this message. Maybe the car rental companies need to talk with the hospitality industry.

Let's see...tourism is down so, like the hotels, LET'S RAISE OUR RATES!!

I don't know what university these rocket scientists went to but my Mom with an 8th grade education was smarter than they are!!

When the tourist industry in Hawaii is sitting on their okoles wonderin' where all the people are I sure hope the light comes on for them and they see....YOU CAN'T KEEP GOUGING PEOPLE!!!

A dollar here, a dollar there. Hummmm...let's go to DisneyWorld instead! Don't think too many tourists got their heads bashed in by the Mouse lately....

DUH!!

Try looking at what the rental car companys are getting for cars lately. The prices for rental cars have skyrocketed... doubled, even on priceline.com !

There should be a truth-in-renting law. Instead of saying "$24.99 a day" they should say "$41.00 a day" or whatever it is after adding in all the additional fees and taxes.

Then again, try and rent a car in Las Vegas. The fees and taxes are roughly 50% of the daily rate.

Ouch!

If Hawaii is trying to keep tourists away on purpose they are certainly doing a good job.
