<quoted text>Give "him" a break? You're kidding right? He obviously had no intention of staying here although he talked like he did when applying for the job. Did great things for the city? Like what? Fire Mike Guinn and hire some fat slob that can't speak to the commission for more that 10 seconds without saying umm 15 times? Also convenient for him to leave right before the budget talks. I'm sure the commission will give him a great going away party and a plaque. Good riddance.
You must have been under a rock or just ignorant for the last 2 years. He kept us from going bankrupt and actually got the city in better financial shape than we've been in for at least the last 4 or 5 years. You probably thought Rod and stooges did a good job too. Gerry hired a public utilities director and took public works back under the city's control were it should have always been. That was the dumbiest thing Rod did while charge of the kingdom. We all knew Gerry wasn't going to stay forever and we've got bigger problems with this current commission choosing who's going to run our fine city. All they've done is sit on their hands and do nothing because they're scared to make the same mistakes that Helstab, Rhoads, Talley and Jack made. Do you even go to any commission meetings or do you just shoot your mouth off and cry about every decision that's been made to better Junction City?

So the next ad we run for a city manager we can include "liars and people with no integrity welcome to apply". You are obviously clueless as to the cost to the city/taxpayer to find his replacement. I wonder if he is going to get a severance package that is based on his current salary with his recent raise? Perfect timing Gerry.
Now why in the hell would give him a severance package you inbred? So your going to tell us that if a job came your way for more money and closer to your family you wouldn't go? For the short time he was here he did some good things and I hope things work out for him. In case you didn't know city managers usually only last 3 to 4 years before they wear their welcome out. I don't hear you complaining about our wonderful commission that hasn't done jackshizt since being in office.

Gerry walked into a terrible situation with what the old regime left. Most of his moves did nothing to save tax dollars. He added staff, granted a finance director was long over due. He refinanced our debt to extend the term due to inability to pay the full payment early in his term. This added years to our debt load. Increased sales tax by 1%. He was unwilling to listen to valid suggestions on cost cutting measures because they would alter his plan for this JC Empire. On and on. I hope our next city manager will focus attention on reducing our costs to live in JC. I certainly hope Ms. Beatty is not considered a serious candidate for the vacancy.

Have you applied for the job ? You seem to have the answers and JC needs all the help it can get.

Gee, Gerry single handedly saved our city? Maybe he can do the same for Mission. You just cannot get over the barnes era, can you, SCOOTER? It just eats at you and fills you with hate, doesn't it? And the worst part is that they got away scott free and are partying around the world while you struggle to pay the tax bill on that crack house you own. TOO BAD, LOSER.

What does it matter that he never intended to stay here? Let's look at some of what he did while he was here: Put the city's books into order with proper accounting; Hired a City Financial Director; put our debts into a more manageable form; Took city services back from Veolia; Started working on our streets again.
And convenient to leave right before budget talks? If he decided to take the job what is he going to do. "Oh, sorry, it's budget time so I can't start until September."?
When a city is fortunate enough to find a quality manager the word gets out. He had to be getting regular opportunities. I don't expect that he will be in Mission too long before a larger city gives him a call.
In other words, the con job that council-manager government works is often successful thanks to bootlickers like Jerry.

Why can't you all accept the fact that Gerry helped bring our city together and helped lead us in the right direction. He had help but he's a great leader. So what he wants to move closer to his family. Isn't that normal? Good luck in Mission,Gerry. You will be missed.

Buulshheeeyit. What exactly did he do to "bring us together"?

A City Manager is no leader; he's a hired hand who's just out for himself. The prototype for that breed is the Pied Piper of Hamlin.

Roo, you are so right. He didn't bring us together. He hasn't paid down our debt,we just borrowed more money and floated another bond to cover payments we could not pay. He was behind raising our salestax to one of the highest in the state, raised water and trash rates, stirred up payrate issues for city employees, then leaves. He was on his way out at Smithville when JC rescued his career. He didn't have the courtesy to inform the commission he was leaving. I think that alone was very unprofessional of him. He knew that no way we willbe in compliance with the state n having our debt ratio in compliance in a couple of years. Just another upset tax payer who feels we didn't get our money's worth from this character. Another bureaucrat con man.

Well said Reality Check There was so many things he did that cost the city so much, and he really didnt care that it did, When I would stop at his office to ask him a question most of the time the staff woould tellme he was on vaction. And when asked questions he would not know simply things that a person in his postion should know about. I would think a person making the money he did would have more intrest in his postion and would have a better work ethic
As for Ms. Beatty the city would be going from bad to worse How she can outright lie in commision mettings is beyond ridiculous.
Hopefully the CIty can get back on track and get someone that is really interested in the city moving on instead of just a paycheck
lotsa luck with that

JC tried a retired Ft Riley Full Bird Garrison Commander , Barnes`s predecessor. There were controversies about DUI cover-ups that nobody will admit to two decades later. Another former Colonel was equally deficient in the early 80`s. Barnes was a glorified clerk who duped the Commission and probably lined his pockets before running like Hell when the heat got turned up a couple of notches. At best , JC will spend big bucks to hire some mercenary replacement for a year or two and have to repeat the process. It takes a special breed to take this job , and most have an out when the sh!t hits the fan.

Pat Landes fought to give the city manager a giant raise while ignoring police officers pay because if we didn't, he would go elsewhere. How's it feel to be a f*cking dumbass, Pat? He had no intention of staying, raise or no raise. You got played. Make sure you tell him how much you appreciate him when you're handing him his going away plaque.

Did the assistant city manager quit too? They have Cheryl Beatty now listed as the assistant city manager and finance director on their website. Curious.

They made her assistant city manager a long time ago, and changed the other guys responsibilities, but I don't remember to what.
Watching it all

Why I don't agree all with what Mr. Vernon has done during his time while here, I can say I have watched and I can see it in black and white. Mr. Vernon worked to bring our debt under control, we were going broke; he set in place through cooperation with many a solid plan in which our debt is now being managed and slowly reduced, versus our City going broke. We have continued to see growth in our community when others don’t within the State. He hired CFO to bring controls under in our spending and overall finances; he hired an assistant city manager to turn around our Public Works operations and saved the City hundreds of thousands of dollars; and to bring in line our costs with Veolia Water. We are seeing out City streets get fixed, our trash being picked up, our utilities getting fixed. We are seeing our City slowly come back for going broke and disrepair. Mr. Vernon during his short time has been that, A Manager, surrounding himself with proven professional staffs that have been able to balance our spending, get things done and fixed and move our City forward. There is an old saying “Those Whom Constantly Complain, Are the Ones Whom Add Nothing to the Solution!” It looks as though many whom have commented on this item, add nothing to the Solution. Think I am wrong? Ask yourself this, when is the last time one saw Commissioner Johnson, Ms, Deb. Johnson, Mr. Sanders, Mr. Steward and many of the others whom have posted on here, whom like be so critical of our City, and yet don’t volunteer for events in making our City better nor give their time in making JC a better place. God Luck Mr. Vernon !!
