Check your pipes

Junction City, KS

#1 Jul 19, 2014
Here we go again, blaming it on the residents. Last year the city was talking about leaks somewhere and this year they are blaming it on the residents. I think they need to look at their pipes and not blame us.

I AM NOT going to stop watering my lawn, my garden nor my plants. I do not even use minimum water allowance and pay too much money for what I do use.

Effective immediately the City of Junction City is issuing a Water Watch (Voluntary Use Restrictions) for the Cityís Public Water System users.

Municipal Services Director Greg McCaffrey issued a statement to the public Friday afternoon.
The City has seen a continuous increase in the overall water uses throughout the community over the last 7 consecutive days. This use has exceeded the limits per the Cityís Municipal Water Conservation Plan (MWCP).

This is the first of three stages of the Cityís MWCP. It is a voluntary measure in which the public is asked to voluntarily restrict their water uses, in order that the Cityís overall water system is able to meet the necessary demands for fire flow and overall domestic uses.
The intent of this stage is to heighten awareness of the public on water condition uses, to maintain the integrity of the water supply system, and to ask for voluntary reductions in water use to delay or avoid implementing further mandatory restrictions.
Such Voluntary Use Restrictions include: Washing full loads of wash, donít let faucets run unnecessarily, monitoring oneís own plumbing for leaks and curtailing outdoor watering of your lawn

You are right on!!!

These idiots have pipes leaking all over town and cannot even find them!

Let's start by firing Director Greg McCaffrey. He is as clueless as anyone can get.

Water plant a mess, sewer plant a mess. They contracted it all out to Violia water who did nothing except laugh at the idiots running this city. Now you see what happens when you contract out services and don't have a clue as to what is going on.

Manage your own facilities and take care of your own town. Contractors are just thieves!

How did one town get so many stupid people to run it?

How appropriate this rant came out the same day as this:

I'm all for banning lawns. It's a waste of resources and just one of another ways it consts too much for society to maintain the rich.

Last time they were talking about the aquifer, then the water main breaks, now blaming it on the residents.

What gives, I think they need to start updating the water mains and they will find all their leaks. Don't blame it on us!

McCaffey needs to go! He doesn't know what he is talking about.

. There is doubt a flawed view of leadership which is involved in a state that has had so little success over such a long period of time led by elected Reublicans at all levels.

You people are idiots and have no clue as to why the city would issue a Water Watch and even why the water and wastewater plants are broken. These plants have been messed up for years and former city commissioners and city workers refused to maintain them or fix them. This McCafferty guy is one of the few whom gets it with the city. He is the one whom over saw the city public work take over saving the city millions and with the city now getting stuff done in public works. I don't want to pay more for my water and sewer but I am thankful someone gets it with a solid plan to pay for it. Keep up the good work Mr. McCafferty you are a breath of fresh air in this city and we the majority are glad you get it !

I ask you the same question. How did YOU for so many years get so stupid to a lot the city to run these water and sewer systems in the ground and contract out the operations of them? This grap I blame on you and all the other stupid townies who have refused to increase rates and manage the city operations correctly. It is people like Mr Vernon,Ms Beetty and Mr McCaffery whom the city should of brought in years ago in which to fix this mess. We have streets, utilities and plants falling a part and for years we had no plans in which to fix them nor the for thought to even know where to start. It is about time we step up and start paying for years of total disrepair. I do not agree on increase taxes but I surely want things fixed and I am glad we finally have some key city staff who know what they are doing. It is about time!

If one is going to place blame on someone look in the mirror. I have been watching what has been going on since Gerry Vernon hired this guy as the than Assitant City Manager 3 years ago. This guy developed a program in which we brought back the dept of public works into the city after being privatized for 8 plus years to Veolia Water. This resulted in millions of dollars being saved by the city. Even with minimal staff and resources things are now getting done. Streets are slowly getting repairs, true useable studies are getting done and implemented and real costs and rates are being developed.

Hundreds of thousands in grants are being obtained over the last years for streets and sidewalks of which none were obtained prior to this guy being hired.

This town was run into the ground by individuals whom did not know what they were doing other than lining their pockets over the years.

We will be faced with debt and fixing our town on pennies because of mismanagement by others.

While Mr. Vernon is gone I commend him on the hiring of this guy as his knowledge and abilities are long over due. I would give him a raise as he is getting things done, saving the city millions and getting grant dollars where others were clueless.

Pay me later haha

Yup Junction City is now paying later. With streets, water pipes, sewer pipes and storm pipes falling a part and no money in the bank the City is paying later and will be for years to come.

Crooked City Commissioners and poor City leadership leads to US all now having to pay.

Do not like it leave as you likely are one of the many whom got rich while placing our great town in the mess it is in

It not this Greg McCaffery the same one who stated we need to get rid of Veolia Water? We need to develop reports on the issues at the treatment plants starting over two years ago And Johnson and Taylor voted this down as they thought Beolia Water knew best? We need to develop sound rates to pay for these plant repairs and upgrades?

If so I think we need to be looking at firing Veolia Water and support what he is trying to do which is fix a long standing mess which was created by Veolia Water and others whom elected to hire them.

What say you Veolia Water supporters?

The issue of the water watch is directly that. Take a closer look at your own system. I am sure the city workers do not purposely plan for the aged system to break nor for valves not work so they can have as many people out of water as they can when the water pipes break. What an idiot !!!!!

And this is typical "I am not going to stop using my share....." That is the point, if one does not pay attention now they may require through mandatory restrictions later on as the city only has so much water to use. Stop being so wasteful and be part of the solution and not the problem.

We can't live without food or water. Climate change and wastefulness endanger both. Ever notice how poor people waste food ? It's mind-boggling that they would , but they do. The rich tend to waste more water with pools , hot tubs , and lawn watering. One day we'll be low on food and water and will have to literally fight for it.

Should that day come in this lifetime, I would volunteer to do to the plutocracy as Donald O'Connor in the movie "Wonders of Alladin" said he wanted to do to the Grand Vizier: "I want to get my hands around his neck and squeeze...and squueze...and sqeeeze...and squeeze...and squeaze..." I suspect however a lot of people will be in line before me.

I would pay good money to see you and Jerry in a knock down , drag out brawl. I have a mental image of it and it's pure entertainment. Like when my kids put a lizzard in the hamster cage to see who would prevail.

Back in the day, politics was a lot more physical. Abolitionist Senator Charles Sumner was laid up from being cane-whacked by a pro-slavery Congressman. And John Adams (Pro-Independence) and John Dickinson (anti-Independence) had a cane duel in the Second Continental Congress, or at least the musical version of it. It may have been "artistic license" though...

Think about pols gunned down by rivals - Alexander Hamilton, Harvey Milk, etc.- or disgruntled office seekers (James Garfield) or anarchists (William McKinley).

When you think of all that and how we in Kansas have only had one (so far) recent death of a political actor (Dr. George Tiller, who gave big bucks to Governor Sebelius and was gunned down by a tertrorist while serving as an usher at his church on a Sunday morning), we've been pretty lucky.)

These people are why the whole city is having problems. Rod Barnes, Mick Wunder, Terry Heldstab, Mike Rhoads, Jack Taylor and Ken Talley. These men started and fueled the push to over expand and burden our city in debt. Residents were practically forced by these men through emergency home rule ordinances. Don't forget these men when you see our empty lots and failing infrastructure. Be sure to thank them appropriately when you see them around town.
