Moving to Texas near the Ft. Hood area and i was wondering was Killeen and the surrounding area was like Junction City?
I don't want to make the same mistake twice. No offense to the locals of JC. In your opionion where was the best place or places to live in the FT. Hood area?

FYI: I just want feedback from some of you who have lived in the area. I have talked to several who do live there and they say to avoid Killeen all together.

Avoid Killeen all together, no matter what. Temple is the closest, safest place to live when stationed at Fort Hood. Harker Hieghts and Copperas Cove are ok, but Temple by far is the better town to reside.

Killeen is not a safe place to live. We lived in Copperas Cove, which is somewhat better, but not great. Temple is a LONG drive from Ft. Hood, especially during the mornings and evenings when everyone is trying to get to work or home. Harker Heights is a glorified Ogden...I wouldn't recommend it! Most housing on post is not the best in the world...very close together, not much green space. Your options are limited...

Agree with everyone. Traffic is horrible! If your not on the highway before 0500 hours, your stuck in stand still traffic on the highway. I cant tell you how many deadly accidents ive seen on the way to work and coming back from work.

One of my LT's was shot by a soldier and its way worse there than in JC.

Just stay on the west side of the highway! lol

Killeen is not a bad place to live you just need to stay away from the downtown area do not live in that area....The Long Branch, Stan Schlueter Loop area are good areas to live in...Shopping is good lots of places to eat and there is weekend entertainment here. I am a JC Native and I love Killeen....

We were stationed at ft. hood before coming up here. I hated it there while i was there, however, after i have lived here for a year, i would love to move back to ft. hood. There is alot of things to do in that area. The traffic is bad and eating out around payday sucks there but i would still rather be there than at ft. riley.

We lived there '95 - '99. It's like any other army town. I miss the German Restaurants.

My husband is getting stationed at fort hood on March the 3rd 2011. He's just finishing AIT,so this is our first time moving. Can anyone tell me the best place to live on post, and what areas to stay away from? What is texas like I'm from a little town in Missouri, so I like small town living.

Try Lampassas or Gatesville. Longer drive, but small-town living.

I was stationed at Fort Hood in the mid seventies and from these comments I see that it has not changed Avoid Killeen at all costs Lampassas is a bit of a drive, but in the 70's it was a grrreat place to live Gatesville is closer as I remember something like Ogden. Stay out of Copperas Cove unless you are going to schoolthere

I'm not seeing how Gatesville and Lampassas are superior to live in than Killeen and Copperas Cove. To drive that far is a waste of resources.

Some people are just more comfortable in small towns with minimal non-whites. See: Chapman, Wakefield,Dwight, White City, etc. Not blaming or defending that decision, it`s a matter of personal choice.

There's a pretty good little gun shop on Rancier. We used to eat lunch at the Long John Silver's and the Jack in the Box over there. When they showed the aparatment house of Dr. Hassan (crazy psychiatrist who committed mass murders at the SRP Site) I think I recognized it as the one across from Long John's.
