Well it is out there - the finalist named for the new City Manager for Junction City

Curious on everyone's thoughts. Will we even find a candidate near the abilities of Gerry Vernon?

In reviewing the final four we are not even close and it looks like none have the experience nor abilities to handle the needs of JC. One has Dept. Head exp and no CM exp., one working in a small town (pop 3,000), one has been in a another small town/ small county with little gov. Exp and the final one has been a CM in still other small towns.

The only thing in common among the four is each has a Masters in Public Administration - does this make them qualified to be a City Manager?

Where is the national applicants we were all so told would take place in hiring a professional firm for $10K ?

We need a seasoned professional and should settle for nothing less !

In what little we are able to see on the "Best Finalist" at present we should go through the process and keep looking as it appears none of the four are qualified.

Integrity and character trump big city experience every time. Given the poor luck JC has had with CM`s in the past couple of decades , we need to focus more on those two virtues in a CM.
Good idea

I agree, however if one can't bring the experience as a manager of municipal operations, how will one ever been able to development the right programs, activities, etc. in order to move our city forward. I can't speak of the last several decades, yet I do know there are many great City Managers out there, and just because one has a Masters in this or that does not qualify one for running a city operation, nor can the City afford to hire one whom does not bring experience in running municipal operations such as ours. We should not be a training ground for one coming from a small town with no actual budget experience (come on a $4.0 million total municipal budget - haha), proven economic experience, and I am not talking one or two industrial parks, we need experience and from what I have seen in the 4 whom are finalist it is not there for JC in the long run, lets keep looking

He was referring to Huma Abedin, Anthony Weiner's wife. Try reading a little slower.

BTW, you know who else has a smokin' hot wife? Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian dictator: http://www.duffelblog.com/2013/09/report-syri...

What counts in these things is where they've worked in this field before most of all. "Professional" City Management is a con game, and they keep floating from town to town like a crap game one step ahead of the police. Eventually they piss enough people off and have to go bye-bye, giving a pass to the people who really run things. So with that in mind, the candidates include three who've been posted in Podunkvilles no one ever heard of and one mid-level bureaucrat from Kansas City. The solution's obvious: hire the one from Kansas City and toss the cv's of the others in the circular file.

From what I have read none of the candidates sound very qualified for JC. Is this the best of the lot ? All three of the current CM's or CA appear to be working and have experience in only smaller communities and one has been a dept. head in KC, not much of a finalist field if the City Commission is looking to choose one of them. I would say back to the professional firm we hired from Wichita, they need to do a better job on getting the word out and market the position better None of the 4 whom are listed will be able to move JC forward, and we need this.

Thanks for the information. Does not look like there are very strong in qualifications. I looks like Gerry Vernon had a lot more experience and overall knowledge then any of this group.

Can the City continue with Ms Beetty, and continue to look as this group appears very weak as best ?

Must the City Commission hire one of these ?

I wonder if the interviews will be made public in any way, or will the public, as they did in the hiring of Mr. Vernon, be able to ask questions as well, as this should be done.

They really are:
Lynne Ladner, most recently City Administrator at Hiawatha, Kansas, yet terminated in July on 4-0 by her commission, oh really, sounds like a winner here; Bret Bauer, currently City Manager at Holton, Kansas, let's CM in a City pop of what 3,300, are you serious?; Gerald Smith, most recently General Services Director at Kansas City, Missouri, one of 3 dept.heads eliminated at KC, hummnnn, with no CM experience,(yet claims to be on the cutting edge - oh really, then why did KC eliminate him?; Leroy Alsup, most recently City Administrator at Catoosa, Oklahoma - let's see he left Coffeyville, KS as city manager to be the first ever county administrator for Cowley County, KS, then left there to be the first ever city manager for Catoosa, OK - What is the problem here, job jumping every few yrs?- Just what JC needs.
Let's hope the City Commission has all the facts on all of these four and from what one can see, doesn't look like any are the right fit for Junction City, let's keep looking

And how much did the City pay for this great national search ? I am hearing about $10,000 to a firm out of Wichita, KS

That`s probably way less than the actual cost , with pathetic choices. They`d be better off eating the loss of $10,000 and holding out for a viable choice than losing millions again through mismanagement. Cut the losses on the search and see the big picture and wait it out. Cheryl is far from the worst case scenario for that position. It`s a no-win job for even the best candidate. The pressure of managing 153 Million of debt , buying 3 new fire trucks , giving fat raises to the top dogs , caving to unions , and the dramma of televised city commission meetings 26 times a year , coupled with public scrutiny , is a formidable task for the very best candidates out there , including , and especially , a retired senior officer or State Representative or Senator.

I agree, let's cut our loses and I would agree, the choices are weak at best. No Cheryl Beetty is not the worst case she is far from it, but I think she is likely the driving force behind the big fat raises to the top doges, as she likely is one of them, if not like the top gainer in the group.

The City Commission has it's hands full, and bring in a less then qualified CM is going to further add to our on going issues.

Go through the process and let's keep looking

second best, I say pass on all four of them and fire the firm in which promised to bring forward a national search with qualified candidates, as the City wasted $10,000 for this process and the administration pushed for this of the City Commission. Again another waste of JC funds, in which we didn't have.

Let's have staff place, via the HR Dept. the ad as others do in the various publications and work from there, as we gained nothing from this national search process.
