Heyy all...sooo my husband and I are moving to Junction City after the first of the year. I'm pretty much excited about moving there...I've been trying to do some research on what the town is like and everything...I made a trip to Junction City in September to get our house and am pretty sure that I only saw like one corner of the town! I was wondering what the town's like and like what kind of entertainment is there!

Are you in for a big suprise, which corner did you see? We have the opera house for entertainment and bars and strip clubs (lots of them) alot of churches also.

Faith Tabernacle Church up on Burke Drive is a fine place of worship. They have a fine young man, Edwin Young who is Holy Ghost filled and he sure can preach!!

If you don't pay any attention to the flamers on this site, you will see a pretty good town for its size. There are political issues but overall most everyone here are good people. Welcome!

Before you go there, you need to read the blog about Thurman and Edwin Young.
Ushers with loaded guns in the church controlling the people.
Pastor taking the parishioners money and giving THEM an allowance.
Something isn't right there.
It's a crazy, do what we say, wear what we say, eat what we say, give us your money, slave to the church, no television, computer crazy cult.

Tom is our resident whiner. Welcome and enjoy.

Oh brother are YOU in for it.
You didn't see a corner, you saw the whole damn town. This place is the pits.
2 whole grocery stores.(That's down from 4 stores just 2 years ago.)
Wal*mart has driven out most of the small business, now everyone HAS to shop them or go out of town.
No Mall, No Dining, No Entertainment, No Shopping!
There WAS a Goody's at Goody's plaza, but it went tits up even before the construction sign was taken down.
Our city government is filled with thieves. The most recent miscreant to get the axe was Mick Wunder and his "blindingly innocent" wife Barb.
Mick is facing sentencing on 11 Federal counts, Barb may be next, but she still posts here under MANY assumed names.
Property taxes, a direct result of the Wunder fiasco and their team of head-nodders on the commission, are SKYROCKETING!
Many people are moving out.
We have strip clubs, bars, churches and check-cashing centers....and thats just about it.
Drunken Knife Fights Nightly at our "classy" downtown bars.
Hell, even the Police Chief quit in the middle of the night. Took a job in Iraq and left, phoning in his "I Quit!" two weeks later.
Oh yeah! I forgot! We have DEBT!!!! Lots of City Owned Properties that CANT be sold and TONS of DEBT!!!
$200,000,000 debt in a city with less than 20,000 people. Come get some!
Yep, it's a Wunderful Life here in JC.
Hope ya brought your check-book.

Welcome to JC. This site is not a good way to find out the truth about JC.
We have had one former commissioner convicted on 9 of 11 counts of bank-fraud/bribery related charges and we have a witch hunt that's been going on for two years to find something to accuse other city leaders for - as of yet, nothing.
The police chief did resign for a job that paid twice what he is making now. A lot of people got mad though because he did not announce he was leaving until after he got the job - go figure!
We do have plenty of bars, and three strip clubs. If you're looking for an upscale club, you'll have to look outside of JC, Manhattan has a great little Jazz Club.
If you are looking to enjoy a show, The Opera House has an impressive schedule of events with pretty reasonable ticket rates, cheaper than KC at least.
If you like to take an active role in stage performances, check out the Little Theater. They do four performances a year so they stay active with rehearsals and such.
The Arts Council is also a great place to find things to do. They have a small gallery and studio, they have classes for youth and adults, murder mystery dinners and an occassional show. During the summer they have free concerts in the park and next year they're starting a new First Friday event.
If the outdoors is more to your liking. Milford Lake and Geary State Lake is right outside the city limits. Unfortunatly Milford Lake was just found to have Zebra Mussels and that will be causing serious problems for visitors in the next few years. But there are many real nice trails for walking, biking and horseback riding; you'll also find picnic areas and playgrounds there.
Shoppping is limited. You will probably get used to driving to Manhattan for a lot. But there are some real nice shops downtown. Our goody's clothing store was one of several that the company closed nationwide, but it will be reopening in the next few months.
Dining - again, a lot of people do go to topeka, salina and manhattan. We do have lots of fast food, and you'll have to check out and make up your own mind about coach's, and tyme out, which are sports bars; Kites, Happy House Grill, a Mexican place on 6th st that I forgot the name of, and there are a couple more that will be opening soon.
I'm sure you will make the most of your time here - but remember, you are coming into Kansas, be ready for a culture shock!

All of this we heard many, many years ago when we moved here.
Please disregard the garbage on Topix. This is a beautiful area, easy to commute to Fort Riley, nice Lake and if you want to live in a quiet area, Milford and Milford Township are great to live in. It's a good area if you are raising children.
As far as the politics in town, they have always been there and probably will never go away. Yet, those kind of issues are existent in most communities, including Manhattan and the surrounding area. Geary County has lower property taxes than JC, which is most likely the only thing that would affect the choice of place to live, especially if you are military or military connected.
Welcome to the area.

Junction City is still an over-priced, over-taxed, no-amenities, no-shopping, no-entertainment, crooked-officials and cliquish long-term residents.
#12 Dec 7, 2009
That's a nice way to spin a sh!tty situation.
The police chief made no mention about quitting and told us he was taking a vacation.
He left for Iraq and still said nothing.
He quit by long distance, leaving the community hanging.
Funny how he quit while Wunder was standing trial.

"welcome" and "To Moving To JC" remind me of those old "Turd Polish" posts.

JUST TROLLING THROUGH TO LOOK FOR PEOPLE DUMBER THAN ME.....

Don't forget the city manager is going bye, bye.
The above remarks about our former mayor mick wunder and barb is bad. Barb is blind but works a computor she can not see. Smokes alot and goes around town like nothing has happen.
What goes around comes around. Scott Johnson city commissioner asked for the other commissioner to resign because Mick could do it by himself. Lots of dirt here. The so called commissioner and landlord love the military but they have NO idea what we go thru. Yes, we are retired and beeen in Jc to long. The town wants you to volunteer for lots, use you up until you hate the outcomes. When you retire they won't even talk to you. Its a process this town goes thru. Move to Manhattan before you get left in this whole. Every time Scott Johnson ideas and knowledge are what we need the 3 blind mice-Mike, Terry and Ken vote against he. They just don't see the light.....

Check your facts on the Chief of Police. He had given them plenty of notice. He gave them the option of a leave of absence or retirement, and the city manager opted for retirement.

Not my post. Someone is attacking the wrong Guy.
#18 Dec 9, 2009
wow...i guess i wasn't quite looking for that response but i'm sure that my husband and I will make the best out of it...Yes We are Military related and that is the reason why we chose Junction City...I will be going to cloud community taking my pre-req's for the nursing program at MATC...so i guess if we don't lie Junction City...we only have 8 mo left on our lease....BUT i'm sure that we will be fine...that sucks that there isnt any malls tho

I came here as Military also, and was mislead by the town although it was not as bad 11 years ago when I came. We bought here and have watched our property taxes go through the roof, they have trippled since we first bought. They did all this expansion thinking the town would profit off the military and it did not work out but in the mean time the people that owned homes are getting stuck with the massive debt and we cant sell our houses because no one wants to buy them. We use to have some options for shopping and dining but they have all gone out of business, the crime at least in my neighborhood is definitly on the rise and a little bit scary. I dont ever remember having to worry and now I do.
I also attended Cloud and it is a nice college and they have good programs and are very helpful.
If you go to the welcome center they will lie to you about what the town has to offer but there are good people here just be careful about what part of town you move to.
If you want to shop go to Manhattan unless Walmart is what you like. I dont go to Manhattan alot but recently made a trip there and was in total shock at the expansion going on and the options. They have Best Buy, Target,Hyvee, Super Dillons, a very nice mall Etc. There are tons of eating out options at nice restraunts. I wish I could say nicer things about JC but thanks to a corrupt commission I am unable to do that.
I do welcome you here and hope that you enjoy your stay.

I went to cloud also for "pre-nursing". Some teachers are fine some aren't. My biggest issue was the online portion of the school, they really lack the new online software and more teachers for online classes. I could give you some bad examples of what happened to me while i was there, but won't. I'll let you find out for yourself.
FYI- nice shopping in Topeka about hour drive! Great mall, has Burlington Coat Factory. If your from a urban area like me, great shopping stores is a must. Not fancy Walmart!
