Does anyone know the person's name that was convicted in the deaths of Deputy Sheriff Luis L. Garza nd his wife back in 1973? I know the suspect originally received the death penalty, but later it was reversed to 99 years. I am doing some research, and anyone who can remember would be very helpful.

his last name is Leonard Freeman. His sentence was commutted to life when the death penalty was abolished in the 70's. He got out of prison on parole last year and is an old man. He lives in the Beeville area now.

The death penalty is back, the guy should have been executed instead of released. He murdered a man and his wife, that qualifies him as a POS in my book. You feel sorry for him because he's an old man? I am sure officer Garza and his wife would have enjoyed getting old instead of murdered. Do me a favor and save your sympathies for those who deserve it.

I agree 100%...he IS a POS...he should have been executed. Who said they feel sorry for him or had sympathy for him? I simply said he is an old man...which he is.

I heard about that story. It literally seems like something out of a scary movie. I can't imagine the fear those poor people must have felt. It's so sad and I cannot believe that man is out. They should have killed him long ago. The world would have one less piece of crap in it. To the family, I know no matter how many years go by it doesn't get any easier. May god bless u and the souls of these two innocent people.

Just to let you know, he was sentenced to life because the death conviction was thrown out because the distrct judge who sentenced him was wrong i'n doing so. The jury should have sentenced him instead so that is the reason he got life instead. Also he does not live i'n Beeville anymore, he now resides i'n SN Antonio by Sea World

Leon Freeman, as he goes by, lives in the San Antonio, TX area. He remarried, and has been living it up. His victim and his wife are still dead, obviously, but he lives seemingly guilt-free and visits jails to preach. You never know who you're talking to...

He should have never been let out. I knew him personally and he was a dangerous man even before his merciless killing of these innocent people. He had already been in prison most of his short life when he killed in cold blood. God bless the Garza family.

I remember this well. I was 12 and lived in Cotulla, the very bank this POS was on his way to rob. One of my relatives mentioned he knew Freeman, went to school with him and he was worthless. The crime he committed was atrocious, I can't think of anyone who deserved the death penalty more. It sickens me to know that he is now out of prison.

My heart breaks for you. I was in 2nd grade with Maria, she was my friend. I have never forgotten the loss of that friendship, I didn't even get to say goodbye. I have always wondered what happened after you all moved to San Antonio, and to know that you were left with a child abuser after your grandmother died, and after losing both your parents, makes me so angry.

Once, I was at my doctor's office in Jourdanton when he got a phone call from the jail. They were bringing Freeman over to see the doctor for some reason (he was in Atascosa country for an appeal or something). I walked right by that man when I was leaving the office, and I kept thinking that I wish I could dosomething to this man who killed my friend's parents. In an aside, my doctor told me that his septum in his nose had been eaten away due to cocaine use.
