I'm thinking of buying a small place in Rhodell. Can anyone tell me about how it is to live there? Is the air clean? Is it pretty safe? I've never lived near coal mines before, and am wondering if there are any problems with landslides or cave-ins, etc. I'd appreciate any information. Thanks!!

In response to your question is living near a coal mine safe ... no, there are no landslides or cave-ins unless you're working IN the mine. It's just dirty as hell and it floods all of the time. Is the air clean? No, it smells like trash and sulfur water. Is it safe? No, if you leave anything unchained, it will be stolen by the pill-heads. If you've never lived here before, I would advise you to stay the hell away from this place. Are you mental? The few decent people and landowners here would like to sell you everything so they can leave, themselves! But you do what you want ... this place will make you regret it.

Thanks for the input. I have always thought WV is beautiful and am studying biogeoecology with the goal of PhD. I was thinking of buying affordable property in the mountains so I could have somewhere quiet to go relax. My budget is unbelievably tiny. I really want somewhere where I can mind my own business that I can get on a good deal, with clean drinking water, preferably from a well..

Do they have any sinkholes in Rhodell? Also, I looked at the town on aerial imagery via satellite and wondered about the coal operations that are going on the other side of the mountain from Main St./Coal Town Rd. Are there two separate operations? Is one a body of water? If so, is it man-made (a product of mining) or a natural lake?

I really appreciate any input. Also, you mentioned pill-heads and stealing. I wouldn't leave things out anyway but would have a gun and an alarm system to keep uninvited guests away. That's just important no matter where you are.

How bad does it flood?

Thanks again.

Most of the people are decent people, they are right about a few thiefs though, there are no sinkholes around, all of Rhodell is considered flood zone, but if it floods its usually the lower end that does. Doesnt flood very often, Really dont know of any houses for sale though. Good Luck

I have lived here for 3 years and never had a problem with stealing...but my husband has lived here for a long time. There aren't any sinkholes. It doesn't smell like sulfur at all the next town does. It's pretty bad with drugs but if you mind you own business they don't bother you. The only problem I really have with the area is the dogs. This is a popular drop off for dogs. So there are lots of strays...and the strays have lots of puppies. It's bad for me because im afraid of dogs. So I am to afraid to take my kids for a walk or anything. They have a park here but that is where all the drug-heads hang out. There aren't any stores around at all..nearest store, hospital, etc. are atleast 25 mins. away.

Actually, there's a big blue house on Walton's Mtn. Rd right on the Rhodell line ... it's for sale. Oh yeah, I just learned that the THIEVING PILL-HEADS stripped all of the copper wiring out of that house. Also, I know of a guy wanting to sell the house at half-way cheap (a half mile outside of Rhodell off to itself ... no neighbors)... oh yeah ... the PILL-HEADS ROBBED IT TOO (more than once, by the way). So what do ya think, is it a good place to move to???

Actually the blue house on Walton Mtn Rd is for sale and the last owner gave someone permission to get the wiring, there is a nice big house up Tommy Creek with a 2 car detached garage for sale that decent but power bills are a little high, there the house where the old barber shop thats for sale if the owner ever finishes the bathroom, its a 2 bedroom completely redone but the owner hasnt been in a hurry to finish it. Theres another house before you come into City Limits thats also for sale

No the last owner didn't give permission for the wiring to be removed ... they're the ones who told me it was stolen. That's absurd!

call it absurd or whatever, you need to learn your facts, it doesn't really matter who told you , guess what they lied. They got someone to help them move and told them to get what they wanted before the bank took it over, now thats a fact.

Ya'll seen my green lawn mower, car ramps, or $1200 worth of other stuff down there or do ya'll keep that info amongst yourselves? When I find out who's got my stuff I'm not calling the law ... I'm walking right past your Rhodell city "cops" and whoopin' somebody's a$$ in front of you all! By the way, topix is a good place to find out things. Thanks for the info! I'll let the proper authorities know.

The nearest store is more like 12 miles away. You sure you live in Rhodell or way on up the road? Rhodell was at one time a nice place but that was years ago. They are still some good people that live there but the majority are either dealers or do'ers. Yes the thieving is bad but it is just a few particular ones that need to be weeded out. Most peoples sewer's run to the creek. It is not really all that dirty from the mines but a few more houses could stand to be torn down. If ya need anything burned down just call Joseph, he takes care of all that. The playground isnt fit to let dogs play in much less your kids, they are subject to either find a pill or a dirty needle. My advise dont move there.

You might take your kids to that park but I wouldnt take a dog there. And as for Joseph, hahaha!!! Thats the funniest thing I've read so far on here. You must be kin. Thier just trying to put on a good show to try to get that baby back. Niether one of them pillheads need that baby. One needs to be neutered and the other needs to be spayed. That nasty thing he's with needs her a** whipped for not taking care of that baby. People who choose drugs over thier kids should be put in a room and gassed. Joseph and that b*tch just want the churches money and testimony so they can try to get Bell back and they aint a Judge in thier right mind gonna give her back to them pillheads, and if he does he needs to be gassed too.

I have to agree with PLEAZZZ. Joseph and Carla have a pattern and are very consistent in that pattern. This isn't the first time they've gone to church and claimed to be changed. The park ... I've seriously considered getting a special bin from the hospital to dispose of the needles so they won't just be there lying on the ground for those poor kids (who know no other way of life)to step on and get some kind of disease. What a community!

I've lived here for a long time, the park is NOT like you believe, we take our kids there alot, the Church from NC comes here once a month to teach our kids and they even bring there kids and play at the park, now don't get me wrong, around the trash cans you find some garbage if the can is full, the druggies don't do there bussiness at the park, it actually a decent park, so please get your facts right before dogging something you know nothing about.

Does anyone have any history on the house on Walton's Mountain?

It isn't surprising when people strip houses that have been foreclosed. I still look at it as stealing, regardless. I mean, when you buy a house, the plumbing and electrical are there. When you can't pay and the bank takes the house back, why take the plumbing and electrical? That stuff belongs to the bank, and should be there for whoever buys the house. Bizarre.

In any case, I'd be interested to know any info on that house. Also any info on any other houses in town that might be for sale? I'm just looking for a no-drama, quiet place where I can study while in school, and maybe do a little soil research, as well.

I'm also curious: why are drugs such a problem in Rhodell?
