Peoples Bank of Ewing employee Accused of embezzling 500,000
Published 10/28/2008 By Staff report

ABINGDON — A Jonesville woman has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of embezzling nearly $500,000 over a four-year period from her employer, The Peoples Bank of Ewing.

Rebecca Dawn Long, 35, of Jonesville, was indicted by a federal grand jury sitting in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia in Abingdon on charges that she embezzled from and defrauded a financial institution of $487,685 and created false documents in an attempt to keep that fraud from being discovered.

Long was charged in the indictment with bank fraud, bank embezzlement, money laundering, making a false statement on a loan document, and engaging in a monetary transaction in criminally derived property of a value greater than $10,000. If convicted on all counts, the maximum penalty faced by the defendant is 120 years imprisonment and/or a fine of over $3 million.

“The United States Attorney’s Office continues to dedicate time and resources to the investigation and prosecution of all individuals who attempt to undermine our financial system,” acting U.S. Attorney Julia C. Dudley said Tuesday in announcing the indictment.“Investigations like this one are critical in maintaining the public’s trust in our banking system.”

According to the indictment, between December 2004 and September 2008 Long devised and executed a scheme to obtain money from The Peoples Bank of Ewing by establishing a line of credit under a fictitious name. After establishing the false credit line, Long allegedly withdrew $487,685.23.

The indictment also charges that Long created and faxed a fraudulent loan document to an office of The Peoples Bank for the purposes of disguising the fact that she had embezzled over $487,000 from that financial institution.

The investigation of this case was conducted by FBI Special Agent Thomas Snapp. Assistant U.S. Attorney Randy Ramseyer is prosecuting the case for the United States.

Hey! Anyone know who this is? I do not, but I looked back at the double wide zoning dispute in Jonesville and noticed that Tim Long's wife's name is also, Rebecca. Could this be the same?

Seems like women in Lee co do this more than men. I cant think of a single man that embezzled at this time. Seems like they had a billboard family pic when mr long ran for clerk?, I think. in the Rose hill area. They are a very pretty family, with young children.. I pray that this is a mistake. Another here, had small children and the judge gave her home confinement or whatever they call it.Her amount was $2?,000.00 embezzled thru the bank, but from her families account. Did this ladys lifestyle change? What has she done with the money, if she indeed took it? 487,000.00 is a lot of money a person could go to South Am and live a pampered life

Heard Tim had recently bought several farms & properties in the Lee county area. I saw his name on a sign at the industrial park. Will these properties have to be returned. She'll likely get a light sentence. How's the money to be paid back? GREED.... What a shame

Did you know about the 'double-wide' conflict? That needs moved. This land was not zoned for what he wanted, I wander if his other properties were zone appropriate. lol I hope the 'county' owns the industrial park, but I don't really have a clue. As for her sentence, she will get about 18months-3 yrs electronic home monitering. As for payback? I think that is what the FDIC is for. Any properities bought with stolen money will be sold and she will have fines and court costs, also legal fees. If she has already confessed and pleas guilty, it will be very minor.
It's a terrible shame. Especially when a person is blessed with such a good job.
