JONESVILLE - A member of the Blackwater Volunteer Fire Department was indicted on arson charges Friday by a Lee County grand jury.

Jason Nichols, 21, Route 1, Box 16, Blackwater, is accused of starting a series of winter fires in the Blackwater area. In addition to allegedly starting a total of 14 fires on everything from brush and forestland to homes, outbuildings, barns and one automobile, Nichols is accused of stealing several two-way radios from a sheriff's department storage room. For that offense, he faces one charge of grand larceny.

The indictments allege that Nichols started one brush fire on Route 607 on Nov. 8, 2005, another on Route 600 on Feb. 9, and five more on Route 607 on Feb. 28. He is further charged with the February burnings of a 1967 Dodge truck, an unoccupied home, three barns, an abandoned house and another home.

The grand jury also returned a true bill charging James Kirby "Red" Nelms, 39, 131 L&N Ave., Pennington Gap, with bank robbery and grand larceny for the Feb. 1 robbery of Powell Valley National Bank in Pennington Gap. The case was certified to the grand jury earlier in the week.

Testimony alleged that Nelms walked into the bank, presented the teller with a white bag, and told her to empty her cash drawer into the bag. Although the robber did not display a weapon, he kept one hand in his pocket, leading the teller to believe he was armed. The robber then fled the area on foot. Approximately $18,000 taken in the heist has not been recovered.

Others indicted Friday, and their charges, include:

•Lisa Leann Cooper, 20, North Kentucky Ave, Pennington Gap, grand larceny.

•Eddie Fleenor, 56, 236 W. Morgan Ave., Pennington Gap, break and enter, grand larceny and two counts conspiracy.
