I got first hand information... As I understand it she was stabbed with a pick... I didn't mention where and they always cover it up... I have a senior rep who gave details. So I don't doubt what you say I am just believing my source.

I find this very hard to believe considering the fact that you didnt mention anything about anybody getting arrested...if all of this was true dont you think the victim would've pressed charges against the other ? I mean getting stabbed thats pretty darn serious

I went to Atterbury in 92-93 yeah there were fights all the time but not as bad as from what I read how things are now. I actually had a pretty good time when I was there and actually have kept in touch with some of the people I hung out with. People also have to understand a lot of the kids who go there (at least back then)come from a rough background and in most situations most of the kids that I new had to basically take care of themselves... Not to mention people only know what they know either because of how they were raised or because they had to do what they had to do inorder to survive. If know one has ever been in these kids shoes meaning upbring and so forth of course know one will understand why these kids do what they do.

Now it is true that the center never reports anything, but Atterbury is displelling students on fallacious charges. I went to Atterbury and was terminated due to a scuffle between myself and my roommate(who is still my friend) and they terminated us for something else. We engaged only in wrestling holds, no punches were thrown. But they "T'd" us for something else and both of us were NEVER contacted by Job Corps whatsoever. Its ashame that Job Corps would make the program sound like a great experience (and some of it has), but it is a different story as soon as you step foot on campus. Some staff curse the students out and yet a student gets terminated for cursing them out?!? I don't understand that. We are all adults and its actually very stupid for some staff to look at a student body and not have faith in them. A girl I know Is trying to complete her trade(her trade is closed till March) and the only thing she has to do is something little to complete. What o the staff do? Neglect her. They pretend that they have so much work to do and yet they can't take the time out to actually look over a students file. You have time to Terminate a student rather than having the time to complete them? It doesn't make sense. This isn't right!. Yet when corporate comes down there, the staff all of a sudden gets nice and expects us to kiss (excuse me) ass and the ground corporate steps on? I don't think so. there is a lot of injustice down in Job Corps. If yoou guys want to learn more, contact me and see what ACTUALLY goes on in Atterbury. ceanasy@yahoo.com

oh yes for that first comment, that isn't true. I think a girl was stabbed at the Kentucky Job Corps when Atterbury was playing against them in basketball. Kentucky was loosing and they actually poured out of the stands and beat up on the Atterbury students. Now, someone tried to cover that up and whoever tried to cover that up is downright shiftless and stupid. Not one staff said a word after that NONE!!! I seen people come back on cruches and some where left in the hospital. It was a complete mess. But here is something that folks in Colombus, IN and Anyone in the world should consider. NEVER and NEVER SAY the word, "colored" this isn't 1965 people. Say African American. Because just saying, "colored" is doenright wrong and stupid. Goodbye

I attended Great Onyx Job Corps in Mammoth Cave, KY and I have to say this doesn't surprise me. The environment Job Corps creates is not one conducive to learning, personal growth, or even personal safety. The facilities are not well monitored, subjects with extensive criminal records are permitted to attend, and the juvenile court system has begun to treat the civilian conservation program as an overflow stop-gap for juvenile prisons. The supposed purpose of Job Corps is to give youths with an underprivileged background the opportunity to receive career training, complete their secondary education, and learn to live independently, but it ultimately handicaps all of these purposes by the unsafe, unsanitary, and unguided environment it permits to exist on its campuses. The staff is underpaid, under-educated, and relies on the sheer zeal for public service of its members to hold the program together at all. The whole idea of moving students to a centre isolated from the neighborhoods they come from is that it removes them from the pressures of drug use, gang activity, and other criminal mischief that inhibit their ability to learn and pursue their goals in the outside world. However, because of its lack of strict enforcement procedures and proper monitoring, a remote Job Corps Center simply becomes a petri dish for the underbelly of inner-city culture these kids are there to escape.

When I left my center, I was the first student in a year and four months to leave with a career certification in my field. That in and of itself took a herculean effort. It would not surprise me if nobody has followed me since in fully completing the program. The Department of Labor needs to seriously overhaul the program so that it truly serves the needs of its students, because as it is, it serves as nothing more than temporary incarceration for poor, mostly minority, young men and women, and there is no justice in that.

Wow! I have never seen such a fountain of mis-information in my entire life. As for "Cean" he and his little buddy got kicked out for fighting. They were told numerous times, like all other students, that fighting would get them kicked out and these two decided to do it anyway. Once they were broke up they got into the hallway and went at it gain, one of them "accidentally" struck a staff member who was trying to break it up. Sorry "Cean" but, nobody feels sorry for you. Try growing up and being a credit to society. It is clear by your spelling of "downright" (doenright) that you needed your education. Perhaps you should have spent more time studying and less time performing "wrestling moves".

The comb incident was two girls fighting and one got poked. It is hilarious how people will belive anything and report things as factual when they don't know a thing about it. I don't know who the "source" is but, he/she is clearly mis-informed or an idiot.

As far as the staff covering stuff up, are you kidding me?! When I worked there the police were called everytime they were needed. However, this was always for a student fighting another student or for students trying to sell drugs on center. The town Atterbury is in is very small. People talk, and I assure you if you are trying to cover up stabbings, rapes, and the other nonsense these "sources" are talking about you couldn't do it.

Like the students, there were some staff there that were, for lack of a better word, "bad". However, about 90% of both students and staff tried to work together to make a difference.

Before I say anything I came from a drugged infested abusive home and my mom died when I was 12 yrs old. I also went to Atterbury Job Corps twice. The first time in 87.I obtained my high school diploma (kicked out for fighting). I went back stayed in the back, moved up to the Honor Dorm, high school classes off campus, then I became President of Student Government, and then Weekend R.A.(Mr.& Mrs. Torrey were there then). My point is this, being young we tended to be destructive, some were disrespectful, but with great teachers and friends, Atterbury can be a great place.I loved it and I sure do miss it at times. Is my picture still hanging up?
