I've officially had it with Lifestyles fitness center. Have been a member for over 5 years and have withstood the nasty restrooms and dressing area, the machines that are outdated and don't work, the less than courteous clientele, and the very limited weekend hours, but after tonight's workout, Lifestyle has hit an all new low. There was tobacco spit all over the urinals, hardly any of the wireless tv units were working, the free weight area for filled with cavemen who liked to grunt as loud as they could, most benches were covered in sweat, half the lights weren't working, and the closer was when I went to use the leg press machine and had to remove about six 45 lb weights that someone had forgot to restack. I later finished my reps on this machine and simply left the six 45 lb weights on it like the previous person using it had done. I immediately was accosted by one of the do-nothing personal trainers to restack my weights. I explained to him that I had been restacking weights all night and I was simply leaving on the machine what was left there for me. He concluded this discussion by telling me I would have my membership terminated if I did it again.

I will not go back there again and would like to know what the Wellness Center is like. I am willing to pay more for a better atmosphere, clean dressing area, and everything is in working order. Any honest opinions will be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, I probably should have. I checked out the Wellness Center today and it seems nice and clean. I guess I was a little hard on Lifestyles. It was the heat of the moment sort of. I was still mad. I am going to join the Wellness Center tomorrow and I will post how it is.

I work out here daily and things are not as you say. I can believe about the tobacco on the toilet, but the dressing rooms and bathrooms are otherwise clean. They don't patrol the bathrooms 24/7, so unless somebody mentions it to the staff they aren't going to know about it until its time to clean them. And if you can't handle 6 plates on a leg press you have more problems than just the stuff you imagine about the gym

Btw. Which machines don't work? Pretty sure I've used every machine there and they are all fine

I will respectfully disagree with your opinion. That's great you like the place and enjoy your workouts there. In my opinion, and it is only my opinion, the restrooms are disgusting. Go walk through the hot tub area and the shower area. I have never seen those two areas clean - ever. Both times I took a shower there I got athlete's foot.

Regarding having to stack and unstack weights on the leg press machine, I want my workout on that machine to be my legs, not the rest of my body having to unstack other people's weights. It is very time consuming and I only have one hour in which to workout. My problem was with the personal trainer who basically threatened to terminate my membership if I didn't restack someone else's weights. Based on that alone, I terminated my membership.

Regarding which machines are broken, go to the cardio section and try out the wireless tv units. If you find more than 50% that actually work, it would be a miracle. Go to the standing calf raise machine and look at the coupler on the right side pole holding the weights. The coupler's hex bolt is broken or missing causing the bolt to simply rest on top of the weights. It also causes excessive squeaking. This has been broken for 3 years. Also go to the sitting cycle machines and try to find one that doesn't vibrate when working out on them. On these same machines, try to find one that has a calibrated computer unit. There are two leg press machines that use barbell weights. The one on the left has so much inherent friction and resistance in it, you are actually doing about 25% more weight than what you have loaded. Basic maintenance would fix this. This machine has been in this state for 3 years as well. One more example are the sit-up machines that face the back window. There are two of them. The one on the left is so rusty and corroded that if you place any amount of weight on it, you can't do any sit-ups. Are the lights still not working in the free weight area? They have been off for two weeks. Also, the water fountains all have broken or busted dispenser buttons. They have been like this for almost a year. Sometimes, the water runs all the time on them.

I have many more examples but don't want to waste more space and time listing them all. But finally, when was the last time you saw them do an update to any machine? Some of these machines were built 15 years ago. What I like about the Wellness Center was the fact that most machines, but not all, are the latest and greatest.

Look at who owns those places. It won't get any better. How about you just go outside and get some normal exercise instead. People look weird when they have gym muscles and tanning bed tans. Just go out in the sun and get some real exercise, for the love of shit. You'll look better, feel better, and you'll save a ton of money. Why is that so hard to comprehend?

I agree, these fitness centers are all out to make money off people. Bunch of steroid users acting like they know what's up. When they get off at the end of the day, they snort coke and laze around. Just get out, eat less and burn calories. Best bet around. I know it is hard to get started, but at least you call the shots and it is free. Good luck, keep it in mind.

I have been a Lifestyle member for 2 years. Yes, I don't feel that the restrooms/showers are that well kept, but I've never actually seen anything really horrible, there. I do have a few complaints. In the ladies area they took out the hot tub and steam shower. Really liked relaxing in them after a hard workout. Also, I don't feel they offer a lot of classes in the evenings for the members that work during the day and they don't stay open very late. The other is a maintanance issue. Everytime they have a heavy rain, the buckets come out to catch all the drips. Let's get the roof fixed! Am checking out Wellness Center, today, and am willing to pay extra for more services. Will wait until the membership runs out before we make a decision. On the other side of the coin, it is a larger area, you don't feel like you are on top of anyone, and some of the trainers are actually pretty nice to talk to. The machines seem clean ( I don't know how old they are, but never have had a problem with the ones I use, however, if you are into spinning, some of those machines seem to never get fixed, and the room is really tight) and we get a discount for being a couple. We will see about next year when I go check Wellness out.

Well...I was a member of the Wellness Center for years, and it sounds about the same. I will have to say,it is SLIGHTLY better in terms of cleanliness but they too have a ton of broken equipment and non-helpful staff members. The deal breaker for me was when they "remodeled" and added nothing for the members but a ton of office space for the staff...they then raised the prices on all their drinks and the monthly membership fees went up as well. Its run by Mountain States,so that should tell you all you need to know.

Honestly,if I had to pick,I would go with one of the 24 hour gyms that have popped up around town. They dont have pools or staff members to help you,but they all look very clean and you can work out any time you want. Theres one in downtown JC that looks very nice and I believe theres one in Boones Creek as well in the Food City shopping center.

Actually, I've about had it with Wellness Center. They're expensive and no one there has really any interest in customer service. I just got off the phone with them telling me how many hoops I have to jump through just to cancel my memberships. You have to spend money on certified mail just to get rid of them. They go so far now as to actually lock you out of the building if you use the outside pool and make you walk dripping wet across the whole gym, down the carpeted stairs and back through the whole locker room, just to get to the machine that spin dries your suit. I complained and some kid told me I should get used to it because it wasn't going to change. I emailed to complain about the kid and no one even bothered to respond.

I'm really impressed with the new Community Center actually. Very inexpensive, two therapy pools instead of one, tennis courts which are beautiful. The place has a lot going for it. More stuff and way less expensive.

I think Wellness and Lifestyles should get their noses out of the clouds and realize people have other good options.

The one out at the Food City center is nice. I was a member there for a while. Open 24 hours, friend staff. Not a huge place, but it had all I really needed. I would consider going back.

My experience has been good at the lifestyle center. I'm a student, so I can't afford to spend a whole lot of money on memberships, and the lifestyle center is cheapest. I'm known by name when I check in my the morning lady, and the staff has always treated me kindly and respectfully (even when they bench double my weight). I think that you can easily find things to complain about at any gym, so it's hard for me to accuse lifestyle as the worst gym in Johnson city. There will never be a perfect gym. I like my gym, for its two basketball courts, racquetball court, and volleyball court in addition to the weights. I would recommend at least my experience.

Both have their advantages and disadvantages. I like the cleanliness and clientele of the Wellness Center. I like the open space of Lifestyles and the fact they actually play music. In the Wellness Center, you can hear a pin drop in their at times along with everyone else talking on their cell phone. What I absolutely hate about both establishments are the hours. How about staying open in the evenings on the weekends? Open a little earlier on Sundays.

I have been a member of both. Wellness Center costs more than the Lifestyles Center but is clean, dry, and in good repair. On the other hand, the Lifestyles Center is generally dirty, wet, and is in need of repair. When I was there, the building had water leaks throughout the building and often had buckets sitting in the floor to collect the water. The floor of the basketball court had a lot of bumps and unevenness due to the water water leaks.

On the other hand the Wellness Center is a very nice facility. The free weight section was on the small side when I was there but was not over crowded.
