A seven-year-old boy was suspended for two days by his elementary school because he fashioned his Pop-Tart pastry into the shape of a gun, sort of.

At Park Elementary school, Josh was enjoying his breakfast pastry when he decided to try and shape it into a mountain. Josh said, "It was already a rectangle and I just kept on biting it and biting it and tore off the top and it kinda looked like a gun but it wasn't."

Park Elementary School in Brooklyn Park, Md., sent a letter home to parents stating, "A student used food to make an inappropriate gesture."

I know when you read something like this, it's easy to sling the "r" word. In doing so, you are doing a disservice to the people among us who are considered learning disabled. I said this word without thinking myself, until recently. Please be aware that you are disparaging a significant group of people who have feelings and have enough trouble already without having to carry the burden of that word.
Just think about it.
Thanks.

This is not funny...I was almost killed by a pop tart when I was cleaning it and it accidentally went off!

Bobby,
My use of the word retard had nothing to do with a person having a learning disability. It had to do with some idiot who went through school and presumably college, got certified, and landed a job teaching young children but doesn't know the difference between a kid eating a Pop-Tart and someone like Eric Harris. Sorry but if there was ever a text book example of a retard that's it for sure. Someone with a learning disability or even Down's Syndrome would seem a near genius in comparison to the Pop-tart putz.

Your repeated use of the word is demeaning and insulting. You have not considered the gyst of my post above. It is a foul, hateful word in any context. Now would be a good time to stop using it.

Yeah, it really needs to disappear from everybody's vocabulary, except when used as a verb, with the emphasis on the second syllable.

You may not think it hurts, but it does.

BTW, I agree that there's something wrong with suspending a 7 year-old for playing with his food. Schools go ballistic (pun intended) over a Pop Tart "gun", but they don't seem to know what to do about outright bullying.

You don't get it either.
It is Never acceptable to use this word.
It doesn't make a damn where you place the "emphasis."
Ask a person of color if it matters where you put the emphasis when you let slip the "n" word. If they are more kind than I am, they will politely tell you that it's wrong any time.
Just like in this case.

You're entitled to your opinion.
I got no problem using the word if I feel it's appropriate.
Your zero tolerance for the word is the same type of retarded zero tolerance thinking that had a 7 year old suspended for eating a Pop-Tart into a shape that may have somewhat resembled a gun. Get over it.

You want to compare the word retarded to the word n***er... WOW.
First of all black folks call each other that all the time and it's not taken as derogatory.
It's only when a non black person says it that exception is taken and racism yelled. Oddly enough though, you don't see whites calling each other cracker or honky as terms of endearment.

To retard something means to slow it, as in retarding the growth of a tumor. It certainly does have a legitimate use as a verb. However, calling someone a "REtard" is never acceptable. First of all, it isn't a noun, but someone's childish idea of an insult. As someone who spent years working with people with disabilities, I regard it as a pretty nasty epithet, right up there with "short bus" and "window licker". Yes, it's as offensive as a racial slur. You need to ditch it if you don't want to be looked down on yourself by most of the population of this country. Knock it off.

As for the kid, a 7 year old doesn't understand schools' zero tolerance policies. Telling him that "bang, bang, you're dead" isn't allowed in school is sufficient. Suspension is ridiculous.

Yes, I certainly DO "get it". I also "get" that as a verb, it has very legitimate uses.

Maybe since he's retarded, it's ok only if he and other retards use the word retard, kinda like the N word. After reading this topic, I vow to gratuitously use the word retarded even more. People who choose to be offended deserve to be offended. This whole thread has become as retarded as the original topic about the retarded people that suspended that kid over a retarded looking pop tart.

Most of the population in this country is welcome to look down on me all day long if they feel so inclined, I'm a big boy I can handle it. I'll continue to use the word as I see fit.

Thank you for this! I was beginning to think I was the only person on here that knew retard had more than one meaning. Ignorance at its best.
