So would Tessa Noel Zelek and James Alvin McCart, who starved and abused their two children. And probably the grandmother who discovered the children’s condition and did not report it, who also happens to be special education coordinator. Grandma was busy teaching a class on child development when she was arrested.

Clayton County police charged the grandmother and parents of 13-month-old twin boys with child abuse after discovering the children weigh less than 10 pounds each — far below the 27-39 pound range for children that age.

The grandmother, Christi Ann Zelek, is the special education coordinator for Henry County schools. Clayton County police Chief Jeff Turner said she is also charged with failing to report the child abuse as state law requires education employees to do.

Zelek was teaching a class on early childhood development at Union Grove High School when Clayton police took her into custody.

“During the interview with police, Christi Zelek told us there was ‘nothing wrong with those children,’” said Officer William Clendenen.

The babies are in state custody while receiving medical care at Egleston Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Turner said the boys weigh 8 and 9 pounds.

The weight range for children their age is 27-39 pounds, according to the Centers for Disease Control’s National Center for Health Statistics.

Zelek and her daughter, Tessa Noel Zelek, and the twins’ father, James Alvin McCart III, both 23, were arrested Thursday.

Turner said Christi Zelek went to the couple’s home at LaCosta Mobile Home Park in Lovejoy Nov. 20 and found the parents passed out and unresponsive.

The severely malnourished twins were in another room, Turner said.

Turner said the grandmother deliberately evaded medical services intervention.

“Instead of calling emergency medical services, she called a family member in Fayetteville to come pick up the twins, specifically to keep police and state welfare from discovering the condition of the children,” Turner said Friday.“Then she cleaned up the mobile home before calling emergency medical services for the couple.”

3 Charged With Abusing Clayton County Twins

November 30, 2007

JONESBORO, Ga.-- The parents and grandmother of a set of twins are facing child abuse charges in Clayton County.

Police said the grandmother of the infant twins found them malnourished and their parents passed out when she visited their house at 31 Lacosta Drive in Lovejoy on Tuesday, November 20.

The grandmother, 51-year-old Christi Zelek, took the 13-month old twins to the home of another family member, according to a release from Clayton County police.

Police say she then returned to the Lovejoy house and cleaned up before calling authorities.

The parents of the twins, James McCart, 23, and Tessa Zelek, also 23, were taken to Henry CountyMedical Center where McCart tested positive for cocaine. Tessa Zelek refused a drug test.

Police arrested all three adults on Thursday and charged them with cruelty to children and contributing to the deprivation of a minor.

Christi Zelek who is a special education coordinator with the Henry County school system was also charged with failure to report suspected child abuse. As an educator, state law requires her to report suspected child abuse.

The twins are being treated at Egleston Children's Healthcare of Atlanta where they will remain until they are healthy enough be placed in a foster home.

I love how Tessa thinks there is going to be some "Matlock" moment in her trial where she's going to be found not guilty! What, are those pictures of your emaciated (that means starving, Tessa) kids just an optical illusion?? The camera man is out to get you??

Tell is, Tessa, why was it so hard for you to just FEED YOUR KIDS?!?!?

She probably has no answer for Sage's question/comment. Of course, that might be because there is not a good answer for not feeding your children.

Looks like Tessa and Christi will be back in court Nov.20-08 @ 9:00 a.m. Seems like courts are asking to have children's medical records on hand from Egleston Hospital. Interesting Tessa! Court date of Trail coming sooner than you think!

Before coming down to hard on the grandmother one should put themselves in her place. It appears she did think of the babies by having a relative come get them out of the house. How do we know that she was really trying to cover things up???? I can see finding her guilty if she made regular visits to the house and knew the parents were on drugs, but if this was her first visit then why was it wrong to give the babies to a relative to get them help before calling authorities?
These babies are reported to be 13 months old . Chances are this is not the first time she's saw them and chances are she's known about the drug abuse going on in the home .. Instead of calling a family member to come get them and HIDE them she should have called 911 right away ...

13 months old and 8 & 9 lb.'s that just unbelievable & horrible ...
