BOTTOM LINE is...
an UN-needed convention center at taxpayer expense is a ridiculous proposition at any time, and especially now with so many people in the area out of work.
THINK ABOUT THIS...
if there were a chance for such a project to be profitable, a private company would build it.
Not so sure

just because you build a convention center dont mean they will come. Over the years, I have been on several committees deciding convention locations. Jonesboro would not even get a consideration. You need something for the attendees to do when the meetings are over. All jonesboro has is private clubs and shopping.
Another major problem is the airport. If you have attendees coming from all over, most would have to fly into memphis and find a way to Jonesboro. It would be a nitemare.
Jonesboro is a college town so maybe you will get greek conventions BUT, most would not be able to afford the cost of a convention center so most would use meeting rooms in the cheaper hotels.
One thing though, if the majority of the citizens wanted a convention center, then the tax would have passed the last time.
You may get some of those self help and other off the wall meetings in the convention center but...most of the time the convention center will just be sitting there - just like the cook convention center in memphis.
Well stated! Large corporations and organizations will not be coming to Jonesboro for a convention period. This whole proposal in insanity and some good ole boy's wet dream.

I read an article on KAIT web site a few days ago that Mayor Perrin said he would withdraw support for the project if it meant another tax to pay for it. He pointed out that there was plenty of revenue already with the hotel tax already in place. So....that makes me feel a little better.
I can't remember the name of the article, or even exactly what day it was that I saw it. Probably Friday or Saturday, but I'm sure it will still be there if you look for it. There is a copy of the actual letter he wrote posted on there, as well.

Man, you guys should be thankful for leadership like that. Here in Fort Smith the city leaders tried to force it on us and the citizens had to take it to court, just to secure a vote, which was defeated.

Look people first off a convention center would help this town tremendous. It would generate thousands of new jobs. Create all kinds of business. Just glad a majority of the citizens can see this. Unlike a few computer commandos on topix. If you topix masterminds know so much, why don't you step up and run for mayor and help this town? Oh wait that might cause someone to look in your background and we might not like what we see. So please stick with your solutions on topix because its not worth a whole bunch.
No need to run for mayor since he doesn't support this tax either! I highly doubt that he will ever see or hear about anything on topix but I am very proud to actually hear of a politician on any level of government oppose a tax hike that could pad his résumé and wallet.

Bravo Mayor Perrin keep up the honest good work!

I just read the article also. Good for Mayor Perrin. I hope this is enough to stop this plan dead in it's tracks but we need to keep an eye on the situation.
