Hope you guys stop this tax. Our city government here in Fort Smith tried to force the "hamburger tax" on us. We had to take it to court for the opportunity to vote on it and it was soundly defeated.

Good luck.

Look people first off a convention center would help this town tremendous. It would generate thousands of new jobs. Create all kinds of business. Just glad a majority of the citizens can see this. Unlike a few computer commandos on topix. If you topix masterminds know so much, why don't you step up and run for mayor and help this town? Oh wait that might cause someone to look in your background and we might not like what we see. So please stick with your solutions on topix because its not worth a whole bunch.

The criminals rammed a tax down our throats for their un-needed Bono Lake. Now the same criminals led by Tim McCall want their un-needed new convention center and a tax to overfund it, due to the surplus left from their illegal Public safety tax".
And who is purposing this tax ? Yep, Tim McCall and the same people who give downtown business a $150,000 welfare package each year; even though they insist downtown is booming. And they start this latest criminal act while our economy is in a depression and most people can barely pay for basic needs ! These arrogant criminals are in another world than the rest of us. And all of them need to go to jail, not supported in their continued criminal behavior.
Say NO to new taxes and YES to sending them all to prison.

I don't know you background anymore than you know mine but since you are so quick to judge others I'll return the favor, it would be a fairly safe bet that my IQ would be higher than yours and my background is no more blemished than yours. I'm not claiming to be a topix mastermind, just an educated and objective citizen. I'm not trying to solve a problem on topix, the truth is, there is not a solution to this issue. There will always be local officials and business men who are self-serving greedy egomaniacs. I assure you, those who are suggesting this have something to gain. I will also admit that I also have something to gain, less taxes!

No New Tax, No Publicly Funded Convention Center, Get Your Priorities straight. During the recent food bank drive, I heard that 1 in 4 area children go to be hungry, and city and business leaders think the best thing they can accomplish is some meeting rooms and a water park......that's rediculous!

just because you build a convention center dont mean they will come. Over the years, I have been on several committees deciding convention locations. Jonesboro would not even get a consideration. You need something for the attendees to do when the meetings are over. All jonesboro has is private clubs and shopping.

Another major problem is the airport. If you have attendees coming from all over, most would have to fly into memphis and find a way to Jonesboro. It would be a nitemare.

Jonesboro is a college town so maybe you will get greek conventions BUT, most would not be able to afford the cost of a convention center so most would use meeting rooms in the cheaper hotels.

One thing though, if the majority of the citizens wanted a convention center, then the tax would have passed the last time.

You may get some of those self help and other off the wall meetings in the convention center but...most of the time the convention center will just be sitting there - just like the cook convention center in memphis.

Hey, if the hamburger tax doesnt pass theyre going to implement a masturbation tax. I cant afford this. I dont eat that many hamburgers but I do masturbate a whole lot so just eat your burgers and pay so I can slap my meat at home. Theyre both value added taxes but I think the value of masturbation is much more than slappy burgers down a bunch of obese people. Strike a blow for the right to free self-abuse and pass that damn Big Mac tax!

All I want is the city to use the money that was supposed to be set a side for the convention center when they imposed the tax on hotels years back. Why do you need a new tax when you already have one for the same purpose unless the corrupt politicians have already spent the money that should have been saved for a convention center.

This whole thing is just so wrong. The powers that be forcing this down our throats. What will a "Special Election" for this cost? They're counting on a low turnout giving them a win, they've done it before.

Actually, that money has to be accounted for down to the penny. It is subject to audit by the State of AR Joint Lesilative Audit Committee yearly. Also, all information is available to you under Arkansas' Freedom of Information (FOI) which makes those documents available to any citizen with a written request. If you believe any funds have been improperly used, you should ask for all accounting from this fund & copies of the state auditors report. If you do find improper use you can request an investigation through proper channels.

How is it not a conflict of interest for Bill Hurt who owns the 501 and a stake in Electric Cowboy of Jonesboro to be on the A&P Board pushing for this 1% tax which if approved will be a 3% tax within a year all so the residents of Jonesboro can fund a convention center right next door to his restaurant and club? How is he even in a position to assign A&P funds when he's basically just taking money from us and putting it in his own already very fat wallet? What real convention is going to skip Little Rock and Memphis who both have international airports to fly into in exchange for an hour and half drive from Memphis airport or two and a half from LR Airport all to come to freaking Jonesboro? I seriously doubt that convention goers are going to be blown away by the fact that we have a Red Lobster finally after the company has been around for 44 years? It's a joke and we the citizens are being played like were idiots. This is self-serving corruption in the guise of "helping the community" - only thing the A&P commision are doing is helping there board members and friends of the board members fund this ridiculous notion of a convention center which has fallen through a half dozen times on our backs ... and now it's just gonna cost us another $700,000 which is mentioned in passing, like it's $5 which blew out the window. The investor group who will benefit from this would love for us to fund it so they can bleed it dry. SAY NO TO THIS TAX

Actually if I remember correctly they had the tax set up to go to the general fund so the would never have accountability. Typical politicians.

<quoted text>IF....and the key word is IF....IF people cared to come to this anti-Christ bigot racist criminal run town, that might be true. But no one wants to come to a town where bigoted lunatics like you are against others drinking alcohol. You're not against YOU drinking alcohol though. If people would come to Jonesboro for conventions, they would have already been coming to the Convocation Center and others. But since you psychotic christian bigots refuse to consider reality, you run your psychotic mouths about how if we just had ANOTHER convention center, people would finally come ! LOL
Also, I thought about running for Mayor. But all I could do is restore People's Individual Rights and run this City UNDER the Constitution. That would lift everyone up. But would end all the criminal activities by the City Council, Police Dept, Code Enforcement and the rest. I would end ALL special taxes. The Police Department would end all illegal searches and obey the Constitution or be jailed. Downtown Jonesboro would no longer get their annual $150,000 welfare package. The bloated Police and Fire pensions would be reduced to reasonable rates. Public buildings like the Forum and Earl Bell Center would return to being used by The People, instead of being held hostage by church groups as they have for the past 25 years.
And we would return to being a community, instead of the good ole boys manipulating everything for their own personal gains. We would start getting people off drugs, instead of telling little children how important drugs and pretending they will get themselves off drugs.
Yes, this City would be an entirely different town IF the Constitution became valid Law again. Our jails would be for violent and agressive people, instead of filling them with pot smokers and drug addicts. So you can see why I have never run for Mayor. The christians would never stand for the Constitution being valid Law again and People having Rights.

Yes, the leaders here in Fort Smith said the same about how much business a convention center would bring to Fort Smith, but the only thing it has done is bring losses of between $700,000 and $1,300,000 a year for the past 10 years. That is taxpayers money I think could be spent in other areas that would benefit more citizens than just a few cronies with huge salary packages and huge expenses

Anyway, I thought the Jonesboro A&P was going to contract with a private company to build and operate the convention center. Did that fall through?
just sayin

seems to me the company wanted the city to pay for the land and building then they were going to run it and collect the income. something like the forum deal memphis got.

"just sayin",
Okay, I thought Jonesboro was going to purchase the land and the a private company was going to be responsible for building and operating it.

No you definitely don't need no white elephant like a convention center being subsidized by the hard working taxpayers, like ours here in Fort Smith to the tune of between $700,000 -$1,300.000 a year ever since it was built, 12 years ago. That kind of money can be better spent in other areas, benefiting a broader base of the citizens.
They certainly don't bring business to town.
