Jonesboro Advertising and Promotion Commision(?) is proposing a 1 percent "hamburger tax" to pay for land that they purchased for a convention center. They tried to do this in 1997, met with opposition from the citizens. It was taken to a special vote and defeated. We need to take a stand and not let this happen. Where does this taxation end? Where do the acohol tax dollars go? Enough!!!

it's the way everyone thinks --money is no problem just raise taxes - goes from our school sysem and up - to where that thought is all the waste of taxpayer money comes from .

According to the table referenced below, Jonesboro already has a 1.5% city tax on top of the state sales tax. Therefore a 1% percent additional tax is actually a 66.7% increase in the city tax RATE.

If I'm not reading that correctly I'm sure some of you will correct my error.

How would you like your income taxes to be raised another 66.7% or your welfare benefits CUT by 66.7%?

For those that have learned new math, a 66.7% cut in welfare benefits means that for every $100.00 that you get now you would only $33.30.

Now where does all this, "it's just one more 1%" end?

As for the new convention center, why can't they use the new building at the fair grounds until there are more events in the area than it can handle. That's a beautiful new, high dollar facility that looks under utilized at the moment.

Even if they knock down the businesses on Caraway road and use the entire block for the new convention center, it looks to me like parking would still be a problem for a large convention.

Let them put an additional Hotel Tax or tax on meals over $20.00 and leave the hamburger's alone.
Call it a "steak tax".

or since we are getting into the ridiculous, everyone who buys prepared food has to show ID and if they are not from Craighead county charge them an extra 10% "guest tax".

For one, I'm tired of more taxes, especially for non essential spending. We NEED, police, fire, schools, roads, etc, but a convention center is a WANT not a NEED.

They will jam it down our throats, but there has to be an end somewhere.

For those on a very limited, fixed income. An occasional trip to "eat out" from the dollar menu is a strain on the budget.

Just look at what "a few more cents", not in taxes, but on food cost has done to your grocery bill over the last few years.

Look what has happened the price of eating out. Most sit down restaurants are up in the area of 25% in the last few years due to rising food cost and utilities.

Say no to this tax! Of course Bill Hurt thinks it's a good idea to build a convention center right next door to this restaurant and club ... duh. It's a "no brainer" for him, but not for the rest of the 70,000 people in Jonesboro or for the other 300 restaurants that are already taxed to death. SAY NO TO THIS TAX!!!!!

I say let Bill Hurt find the money for his convention center elsewhere. We need to contact the mayor's office and let our opinion be known. And any other way we can. We're taxed to death as it is.

dont know bill hurt, but recommend he solicit donations door to door.
I'll never vote for another tax increase until every government employee gives up his or her cushy chair and works on their feet all day like the rest of us.

From the way I read the article in "The Sun" they're not planning on bringing it to a vote. We need to protest enough to make the just that and then vote it down. I'm tired of funding their little pet projects.

I am sick of these so called local leaders who always have an agenda. We are in a depression whether they admit it or not. No way will I support this. The people who started this should be ashamed. They discust me totally.

Better late than never, Prof. Interesting that so many who voted for the greedy federal tax-and-spend fiends are now whining about the greedy local tax-and-spend fiends doing the same thing. All those who voted Obama are just beginning to get what they deserve; the rest of us have to deal with this "taxation without representation" scenario that always comes with democraps in control and you don't have "George" to blame any more.

Not only is this Hamburger tax an additional 1%, but this tax can go to 3% once it is ever approved.

So Jonesboro, you need to STOP this tax before it ever takes place.

Fort Smith had this same issue last year and the citizens rose against the tax. Get the word out to stop it.

I thought the tax they placed on hotels a few years back was supposed to pay for the convention center. What has the city done with this money that they have been collecting?

I really like how they spent the $4,ooo,ooo+ then decide to add another tax on us to pay for it. Seems like the "good ole boy" system is still alive and well in Jonesboro. That's just wrong. Plus who do you think will pay for the convention center when they build it? Why do we need a convention center anyway. We have the Fowler Center and the Convo Center that work just fine. This is about making the rich richer at our expense.
