I have often seen this paticular profession, either paid or volunteer, become the whipping child of whatever community it exists at times. And what I mean is, these firemen or firewomen, either paid or not, do countless good things in their community that never go recognized. And its not that they do it to get recognized, but it only seems like the media loves to jump on one bad apple to taint the reputations of the whole department or profession. For example, Joe Blow fireman, has a wreck and was found drunk. The news flash will be guaranteed to read like this-- Whatever City Community Fire Department member, Firefighter Joe Blow has wreck under the influence. You will never see Office Depot worker has wreck under the influence. They love to down any civil servant, paid or not. It makes for better headlines.

Anyone with a badge should really consider any and all their actions, because your not just representing yourself, you could be representing a whole profession or department. I would like to say most all profesional firemen or police realize this but you do see some make mistakes, just as you do with volunteers. I go back to the fact we are all humans, and mistakes are going to happen and people will be punished for them.

Volunteer Fire Departments are required to undergo background checks, license checks, etc. If information is not given or has been sealed by the state, information can and will fall through the holes without notice. Firemen are trained and are required to undergo probationary periods if they have no experience, we are required to have monthly training, and also be certified with State and Federal requirements. Just because one fireman makes a choice and chooses to have problems, may cause heartache or even some dissention in the department. However talk to any fireman or firewoman, and they will tell you, WE ARE A FAMILY< we overcome problems, learn and grow as a stronger family when there are problems in a department. The asst chief chose this on his own, he was not made to act on any choice other than the choice he made. Have you ever made a mistake, sure we all do and will (WE ARE HUMAN) People make mistakes. Let the family and the department get through this without the assumptions and the bashing. And BTW I’m thankful as a fireman and responder in Craighead County to have volunteers who will respond without pay, to assist you or your friend or your family in their time of need!! We live it, breath it, and I’m going in, when you’re coming out!! Thanks to all our firefighters who put their lives on the line everyday!!
I haven't followed this thread, but hearing WE ARE A FAMILY is an awesome thing-because it must really suck to go into fire with someone making you feel and even telling you you're not.

To shine light on the subject, and Im just an outsider or a concerned citizen that is protected by VVFD. I spoke to one of the board members the other day, and he told me VVFD never really had any kind of training program or any kind of knowledge of how to handle things. He explained to me that the new asst. chief is an ex police officer and also a cert FF with several years of experience and has joined VVFD and is really making an effort to get things cleaned up in the dept. He has allready made several decisions to eliminate problems and I really feel that he is a great asset to our community, and its about time that we get someone to help run this dept, Maybe he should be the next chief!!

I myself live next to the South Ridge Fire Department. Nothing but volunteer's. So, if my house is on fire, I don't think I would be a cry baby over who puts it out. I have great neighbor's that are part of this fire department. My next door neighbor told us to call him instead of calling 911, because he could have the water truck here in sec. So, thank you, to ALL firefighters.
