child at valley view strapped in chair

I think the main point is that the mother wasn't notified. I would be very upset if my child was restrained and nobody told Me. I'm pretty sure if any of us heard about a parent doing that as a form of punishment or safety red flags would be raised and DHS would be notified.
I also know that kids with THIS type of MD (sometimes uneducated individuals assume MS) they have to use large amounts of steroids to help muscles which effect personality and this disease also brings things along that can effect moods. I to know what child this is from going to VV and I have seen him very nice to children and adults.
I know you must have DOCTOR ORDERS to restrain a patient at hospital that is a threat to employees and themselves. If not its battery...

I know that with this form of MD children can have Austism Spectrum Disorder which would explain the child behavior you described. No its not correct for a child to cuss but I think many need to understand this disease and just seeing child picking up your child or subbing may not give you all the detail of what the medical conditions are. But this is like an autistic child having outburst. Except add steroids BC that a treatment used for DMD...
Instead of bashing the school, the child, etc I think we should help the family. After all he is still a young boy with a fatal disease trying to get treatment.

Hey, 100% of the little bastards we've seen for 15 years in the Candlewood part of Valley View/Jonesboro cuss worse than any adult I ever saw. They go down the streets in packs cussing at people in their yards and cussing each other, calling each other bitches and who res and queers and acting like all of the above. Fukk seems to be the mainstay of their vocabularies even when they're talking to their low-class drunken, drugged out parents who are teaching them that that's normal and it's only people who object to their crap that are wrong, so stop trying to pee down our legs and tell us it's raining. These kids and their parents are just plain rotten and would all have to be tied down to get them to behave right and stop their psychotic behavior.

If your have a special needs child a public school is no place for you to have them!! Jonesboro has facilities for children with specical needs that get the attention and care they need. It is very hard for them to get what they need in a public school system. My opioin when you put a special needs child in a regular class room it takes away from the other 16 kids in there and then they all suffer!
I hope you do not refer to children with muscular dystropy or cancer as a child that should not be placed in a regular class because of their illness. This little boy was in Special Ed class a few hours a day and then he was back in his own class with his friends, so he was not taking away from the other children in the class. He is fighting to stay alive as the prognosis for this disease is not good. Most of you will get to see your child graduate from high school. This family may not get to see this. The sad part of all this is that this little boy who has enough to handle with this disease cant run, jump or do so many things that his other friends can and has now had to leave his friends of 3 years who knew what he could and could not do and go to a school where no one knows him. These were the same friends that knew he was having to get on a plane every week and fly to Ohio for injections, muscle biopsies and other tests. These friends loved him and he loved them. These children knew his condition. The parents of these children should be proud of them. Last year his classmates brought money from their piggy banks and gave to him so he could buy a toy when he went to Ohio for his doctors visit. He begged not to have to leave his friends and go to a new school but circumstances made it happen. The school should drop their head in shame for letting this happen. My heart goes out to him and his family for this and Valley View should be looked into on why this happened to this child. Yes all this is true because I know this family so it is not gossip. And when you decide to post on this site think about who is the one that is having to suffer in all this. It is not the school, the teachers but this little boy who had his friends and security at Valley View taken from him. When you think of him he is a little blonde boy that is about the size of a 4 year old and the teacher could not control him except by restraining him in a chair with restraints. I pray every nite for this child and ask that you do so to.

Physical restraint should be reserved for situations or conditions where there is imminent danger of serious physical harm to the child, other children, or school or staff. These procedures should not be used "except" to protect the child and others from serious harm and to defuse imminently dangerous situations in the classroom.

MONTCLAIR, N.J., Oct. 15.-- Miss Edith Chase, a teacher in the Montclair outdoor school for children of tuberculous tendencies, has been removed to her home in New York City suffering from serious injuries resulting from an attack made upon her by Benedict Annello, a seven-year-old pupil.

After teacher Kelly Sanchez confiscated Halloween candy from a 10-year-old 5th grader at Zellwood Elementary school, the student allegedly attacked and threatened to kill her, NBC Miami reports

A 10-year-old boy has been arrested over an alleged attack on two teachers at a school in south-east London. One of the female victims suffered a broken leg and the other had a facial injury, Scotland Yard said.

A Rising tide of violent indiscipline in primary schools was laid bare yesterday. Official figures revealed that 90 children are sent home every day for attacking teachers or classmates.

And the worst deterioration in behaviour is being seen in the most affluent parts of the country. Teachers blamed parents for failing to equip children with the social skills they need to cope in the classroom.

Teachers now face attacks from primary school pupils, who are regularly excluded for violent and threatening behaviour (posed by model)

Last year primary schools expelled nearly 300 pupils aged 11 and under for violence and handed out almost 17,000 suspensions. This means that on any given school day in 2010/11, 90 pupils were ordered out of school for attacking a member of staff or fellow pupil.

Now the above post makes sense to me. This is the proper discipline for a Duschenne Muscular Dystrophy child. He was a DANGER to the teacher even tho he has little muscular strength in his fingers or hands and cannot get up out of the floor like other children but has to crawl to a chair for support or try to walk his little hands up his legs to stand up and cannot walk the length of the hall, so he is in a stroller some time, but this child was a BIG THREAT to the teacher at the school. You need to get on the web and look up this disease so you can see that he could not even protect his self from another child must less a teacher that wanted to tie him up. What do you think he was doing when she was doing this. I am sure this was calming him down and making things better. If you were being put in a chair being bound by someone that weighed about 3 or 4 times more than you and was scared because he did not know what was going on or where his mommy was really solved the problem that was going on.
Do you want me to quote the number of times children have been abused by teachers.
This is so absurb that it needs to be sent to THE NANCY GRACE SHOW.

I have yet to hear or read anything further on this situtation. I happen to be good friends with Mr. Lindly, Mr Popejoy, and Mr. Huggins, and I have asked them several times over the last few days if any of this was true, and they said with a serious straight face this is all rumors. Nothing like this has happened in the school. So I believe this is some lady trying to get attetion, or listening to thier kid and avoiding facts. Not only would there be more than one teacher in a room with Special Needs there would also be other students. Kait news would have caught onto this story by now if any of this was remotely true. And if you were making weekly trips to Ohio then why would not stay in Ohio? Why would you make trips of that distance, and keep your kid enrolled at Valley View? I am sorry but you sound like a parent from Westside or Brookland that is upset with Valley View.

I dont know who you are and if you have children but if you would meet me I will show you the weekly trips in trial studies at the Nationwide Childrens Hospital in Columbus Ohio that this little boy has been making since March 1. The reason he does not stay there is because his family is here. Evidently you are not aware of the Benefit they did for him last year at Valley VIew School. Evidently you do not have a child and do not know what it was like when they were told at the age of 4 that he had this fatal disease which did not have a cure and would live only a few years because his heart and lung muscles would stop. Evidently the people who are telling you that this did not happen and looking at you with a straight face is lying to you. I am not a cruel person and I hope and pray that you do not have a child that is ever struck with a fatal disease because you do not have compassion for people who do have a child that has a disease that they know has no cure. Their only hope is the trial studies in Ohio. The names you have spoke to I do not know but if they are not aware of what is going on they will. Please write again in this topixs when you read in the paper the story. I hope you are not as cruel as your text sounded. No little boy deserved to be tied to a chair for discipline.

Yes you should know the facts Before you post. Whoever your teacher friend is she obviously doesn't work with this child! I have witnessed him cussing and hitting at teachers and when I subbed he could not do the work his classmates were doing, so that would indicate his disability was not just physical. I have subbed at VV for several years and have never seen any child treated unfairly no matter how bad they behaved. I'm sure it is hard to be called a bitch by a six year old, but the teachers I witnessed handled it very well and tried to redirect the child and do their best to not let other students witness it as much as possible. Hard situation for all involved.
I am the teacher friend and I have worked with this child. He is not a threat in any form, he has muscular dystrophy and is actually PHYSICALLY WEAK bc if you know anything about this disease you know it weakens muscles and breaks them down. This child has never been a problem for the several years he has attended our school.

Sure hope you're profession is not a teacher! You're post is ridiculous! Why don't you take the time to look up the disability before making such a ludicrous statement! This child deserves the same as any other child and there is absolutely nothing mentally wrong with this child. If I were to line him or her up with three other children you would not be able to tell me which child had the disability! I know this child and the family very well and this child does not need to be in a "facility"!! Now later down the road the physical limitations will more than likely be more apparent but not now. Please get your facts straight before making such statements! I pray you never have a special needs child because you obviously would not be equipped to do that child justice! Just sent them to their own facility is no answer!!

Would the school really own up to this? I seriously doubt it. I know I would deny it if I was asked and it happened if I was in their positions. They know they were wrong and since VV is school of choice people are more shocked. It sounds as though the school was very good to him until this happen. For whatever reason it was decided to restrain him it should have not happen. NO CHILD SHOULD BE RESTRAINED FOR BEHAVIOR. But the officials need to own up apologize for mistake and make it right. After all we teach our children to not lie and own up to their mistakes.

Please understand schools across the nation face these dangerous situations on a daily basis. Teachers are there to protect every child. Teachers will restrain kids for that kids safety and others until help can arrive. If a kid is hitting, kicking, spitting, attacking, shooting a gun, swinging a knife or bat, etc. I ask you, what should a teacher do? Step back and take cover? A teacher should just allow said kid to throw his or her attack? I don't know any specifics on this incident other than what I read here, but instead of bashing a school and a teacher, let's understand all the facts, and lay judgement then. I feel certain all the facts are not going to be on topics. This is not the place to discuss any of this actually. If the parent has posted here on this, my suggestion is to report her complaint to the school and others if so desire.

And remember physical restraint should be reserved for situations or conditions where there is "imminent" danger of serious physical harm to the "child", other children, or school or staff. These procedures should not be used "except" to "protect" the child and others from serious harm and to "defuse imminently dangerous situations" in the classroom.
