Any decent painter is going to charge you by the sq foot, Its not unheard of to get a good quality paint job for 1.50 a foot, in fact that is the price I give my contractors who are loyal to me, but the price will vary depending on who you call obviously. And to the person who says ALL painters are alcoholics or drug addicts, get an education you moron, there are a few to not even call, but as for most of us, we are professional, courteous, and straight laced people, who work very hard operating our own business, which is difficult. So please keep your derogatory comments to yourself and don't bash someone elses profession. I have a wife and two beautiful daughters who are well taken care of because of my business, and am a totally sober person. Idiot.

Your formula would be used only for measuring the square footage of a ceiling or floors....not wall space. Wall space would be considerably more square footage.
The Square footage of a wall is the length times the height.
Example...a 12 X 14 room with an 8 ft ceiling height would be:
416 Sq Ft of wall space.
Now...you have to take into consideration doorways and windows. However....considering the time it takes to paint and trim door and window frames I think I'd use the full footage calculations.
So...in actuality if a painter charged $1.00 per sq ft to paint a 12x14 room...the charge would be $416.00.
I could be wrong...but I think that's how you'd have to figure it out according to painted sq ft. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. I'd like to know...

..........that is absolute NONSENCE......maybe the painters you hired are like that but why say all.....while I do smoke cigarettes.....I do not do drugs, nor do I screw up my billing. I always finishe the job and do high quality WORK......maybe next time you should hire professional painters and not "fly by night scammers".....and remember this....you get what you pay for.

Farrell calhoun charges me 42 for 5gal of high build primer. Then 22 a gal for premium paint. Equivalent to sw premium of 65 a gal. Will never use anything but farrell unless I have to.

Not true, only paint at sw any good is 60 a gal. I can get as good or better at farrell for 22-32 depending on the color and if it's exterior.
